Information on New England area Fall Trout Stocking

With autumn weather cooling off the water conditions and winter fast approaching, the hatchery trucks are winding their way down country roads and trails to stock trout in cold-water fisheries throughout the Northeast to give a boost to winter trout fishing efforts.

Maine

The fish stocking report now features daily updates from hatchery staff. Instead of hearing when and where the hatcheries have stocked well after the season has ended, anglers now will be able to easily locate waters freshly stocked with catchable trout.

Waters are grouped by county, listed by town, and include the date of stocking as well as the species, quantity, and size of fish released.

New Hampshire

Every year the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department stocks nearly a million catchable-sized trout for your angling enjoyment. Updates on the location of the previous week’s stocking activities are posted page during stocking season.

Vermont

Every year the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department stocks dozens of rivers, lakes and ponds with catchable-sized trout to increase your chances of angling success in Vermont. Whether you’re looking to catch a beautiful “Trophy Trout” on the Winooski River or cast for brookies in a stocked stream near you, Vermont’s stocking program will not let you down.

• Fingerling Salmon in the Winooski River.
• 1400 2YR salmon and 1000 2YR BKT into Harriman Res and Lake Dunmore.
• 700 surplus brood Brown Trout divided between Lake Fairlee, Bomoseen, and St, Catherine. (possible)
• handful of brood salmon into Lake Wiloughby and Seymore after spawning. (possible)

Maine Brook Trout

Massachusetts

Approximately 500,000 hatchery grown brook, brown, rainbow, and tiger trout are stocked in lakes, ponds, rivers and streams across the state, to offer anglers of all ages exciting fishing opportunities that would not otherwise exist.
In the fall, trout stocking takes place during a 2-week period, usually beginning in the last week of September and ending Columbus Day weekend in October.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island is spotted with trout fishing waters. Ponds, streams, creeks, rivers and lakes are likely to contain trout.

Connecticut

From now through mid-October, DEEP is releases thousands of “trophy” and “adult” sized trout into selected waters throughout the state. Approximately 5,000 are “trophy” size Brown Trout (all greater than 12 inches in length), 8,000 are “trophy” size Rainbow Trout, 1,000 are broodstock Brown and Brook Trout, and the remaining 15,000 “adults” are standard size (9-10 inch) Rainbow Trout. In addition to these fish, the Farmington River was stocked with 2,000 “trophy” size Brown Trout just before the Labor Day weekend. Additionally, 33,000 “yearling” trout (4-8 inch fish) will be stocked in a number of waters. These fish are intended to grow and holdover to provide late fall, winter and early spring fishing opportunities.

New York

Each year DEC releases over one million pounds of fish into more than 1,200 public streams, rivers, lakes and ponds across the state. These fish are stocked for two main purposes– to enhance recreational fishing and to restore native species to waters they formerly occupied.

New Jersey

During the 2015 fall trout stocking season the Division of Fish and Wildlife will stock more than 20,000 trout in the state’s major trout waters. This year will see a return to the stocking of larger fish measuring approximately 14″ up to 22″ in length and weighing one-and-a-half pounds to almost eight pounds. These Rainbow Trout will be stocked in 16 streams and 15 ponds over the two-week period.

Pennsylvania

The Fish & Boat Commission annually stocks streams and lakes in Pennsylvania with trout and warmwater/coolwater (musky, walleye, panfish, etc.) species throughout the year.
