Landlocked salmon were jumping all around me, so I couldn’t blame a lack of fish for my morning skunk. I’ve seen this play out plenty of times before in trout streams and ponds, where picky trout and salmon snubbed everything I threw their way. Getting desperate, I tied on an old favorite with a new spin. The Panther Martin Spinner has been a trout-catching classic since 1958, but they recently introduced a UV series of spinners. I’d largely dismissed UV paint as a trend designed to catch more fishermen than fish, until a landlocked salmon stopped the UV Panther Martin in its tracks. Fish that had already passed up stickbaits, spoons and traditional Panther Martin colors still took a swing at the UV color. That UV Panther Martin has since proven itself on other tough days, and now I’m a believer.
