Field Test Favorites: Century Rods S1 Stealth Series

The Century Stealth certainly had a different feel from other surf rods I’d fished. For one, it was lighter, incredibly so. The 11-foot rod couldn’t have weighed much more than some of my freshwater fishing setups, so I had some doubts about its stopping power when it came to big striped bass. As for casting, this rod was without equal, at least among the surf rods I’d tried before. Its soft tip loaded up with 1- to 2-ounce lures and sent them into the stratospehere – or at least over the sandbar. The rod’s ability to cast lightweight plugs a long way made it a favorite for open beach fishing. By mid-May of this year, I had the opportunity to pit the Stealth against some heavy stripers, and I found that the rod could handle the pressure of a hard-fighting bass, and even put the boots to it if need be. I keep looking for a compromise with this rod, but it’s proved to be lightweight, long-casting and powerful, which is everything I could ask for in a surf rod.
