Field Test Favorites: Frabill FXE Windproof Fleece

I love a nice fleece jacket—until the wind starts to howl.  No one will argue that a fleece coat isn’t warm, but the material’s Achilles’ heel has always been its inability to block the wind.  Then I was introduced to the the FXE Windproof Fleece by Frabill. This fleece jacket (unlike the ones with the logo on the back shoulder) is engineered explicitly for us fishermen. It is fully windproof, treated with a special laminate to cut crisp fall and winter winds. An extended height collar keeps the chill off of your neck.  Another feature not to overlook is the water-resistant cuffs, which stop water from soaking your arms each time you reach for a fish.  The underarm zipper vents let you regulate temperature when the outside air warms or you get sweaty from fighting fish. There are multiple zipper pockets, including one on the chest for quick storage; warming hand pockets angled just right and a lycra stretch internal pocket for items like sunglasses and small bait containers.  The zippers have stood up well over the last 6 months and seem to be very good quality.  It’s a well thought-out jacket designed specifically for fishermen.
