It took me years of trial and error to find a flashlight that really worked for my fishing. First, I realized that lights that couldn’t survive total immersion in water wouldn’t work. Whether fishing on boats or from shore, non-waterproof lights perished under rogue waves, boat spray or general clumsiness. Then I realized that for me, headlamps didn’t work. Over time they’d give me a headache, and sometimes getting them to shine in the right direction was a challenge. Then I discovered the lights with a twist on/off mechanism didn’t work because they required two hands to turn on, which, takes longer and is cumbersome with a rod tucked under your armpit and a thrashing fish at your feet. Then, thanks mainly to my lackluster organizational skills, I realized that expensive “tactical quality” lights weren’t right for me because they put a major dent in my wallet when I lost them or dropped them over the side. What that left was the StreamLight 2AA LED handheld flashlight. This light has survived two seasons of being worn around my neck on a lanyard, and I expect it to last a few more. It’s lightweight, impact resistant, waterproof to one meter, has a push-button tail switch and is priced less than $25.00. I liked it so much that after one season of use, I purchased two more for when I inevitably lose my current one to the depths.

Why don’t you get a hands free head lamp. You can get them just as inexpensice just as bright, and you don’t have to worry about losing it, because it’s always on your head. I’ve had one for 4 seasons now, and it’s soooo much easier now than when I had to hold a light in one of my hands. or even worse, my mouth!
I prefer head lamps. I wear one around my neck (if I leave it on my head I get a headache) and put it up to my head when I need it.
