Swedish Pimple

Everyone has their own secret or pet lure when it comes to fishing for false albacore and bonito. While many anglers used Deadly Dicks on the South Side of the Cape, I opt for an old favorite – the Swedish Pimple. I was first introduced to this lure by my Great Uncle Lenny while ice fishing for perch in New Hampshire. Uncle Lenny would tip the hooks with a shiner or perch eye to “sweeten it up” as he would say. For ice-fishing, a size 3 was the best. As my fancy turned to saltwater fish, I discovered the Swedish Pimple was still a very productive lure. When I was throwing the lures to blitzing albacore and bonito this fall, I mostly went with the size 5 or 6. These can be tough to cast, but with the finicky speedsters, you have to closely match the size of the baitfish present to get hit, and this year the bait was small. I’ve also fished the size 14, a 4-ounce lure, for black sea bass with great success.

One of the first jigs out of my box when targeting trout under the ice. Sweeten the hook with a shiner head and you have one deadly combination.
