Field Test Favorites: Van Staal VM150

What immediately appealed to me about the Van Staal VM150 was the opportunity to get Van Staal toughness at a not-so-Van Staal price.

What immediately appealed to me about the Van Staal VM150 was the opportunity to get Van Staal toughness at a not-so-Van Staal price. The reel is bailed and has a similar look to the VS series reels. The retrieve is smooth and the drag has been great on stripers into the 30-pound range, caught casting plugs and eels from the boat. At the end of September, I switched the reel over to a 9-foot surf rod and had a blast catching stripers and blues on poppers. The reel survived more than a few dunkings in the surf as I landed fish, and it hasn’t skipped a beat. The VM150 seems to be a great choice for the angler looking to get a high-performance reel for a mid-level price.

Still out of a lot of fishermen budget. Penn has a better(spelled less expensive) choice in the SpinfisherV.

That is not as surprise, Penn has always been my favorite! Many Stripers & Blues can attest to that!

Except a spinfisher will only last 3-4 years under hard every day charter use in my experience.
