Penn Reels has reintroduced an updated version of one of their most popular spinning reels, the Slammer.
The Slammer III is tougher than ever with its IPX6 Sealed System that keeps water out of the gear box and drag system–a big boon to surfcasters, kayakers, and small boaters. The sealed Dura Drag system that dishes out 30-pounds of pressure on the smaller models and 60 pounds of pressure on the largest.

The smallest Slammer III rips in 37 inches of line per turn of the reel handle, while the largest reels winches in 43 inches per turn.
The Slammer III also includes a comfortable oversized reel handle grip, a full metal body, sideplate, and rotor, and seven stainless steel bail bearings.
There will be eight models offered to cover everything from inshore fishing for albies and weakfish to offshore fishing for tuna.

Hi….I am trying to by a surf caster combo for my husbands 40th birthday but have no clue what is a good purchase. I have seen a lot about the Penn Slammer III. Can any one shed some light on a good purchase for both rod and reel? Live in MA and don’t want to break the bank either.
Thanks!!
Go shimano for surf reels. The shimano ultegra 14000 is $150 and smooth. The pattern of the line makes nice long casts. And get an 11′ rod of you price range. I have most of the Penn’s from the past decade and for the money they are not worth it.
Where can you find an ultegra for $150?
You might want to try the Daiwa D-Wave Saltwater Spinning Combo as it is both affordable and a good quality
@jeanine: either lamiglass rod or st croix rod /w this penn slammer :)))
Hi
Where will he be fishing mostly? Slammer isn’t available until fall. What’s your budget? I can give recommendations–or better yet, a good shop to go to for help (depending on where you live).
All depends how much money you are willing to spend. There are a lot of good options out there. Some rods price around $100 there is the penn prevail, st croix mojo surf, tsunami airwave. These are good choices for that price range but of course there are better rods for more money. For reels you want to find one that is sealed well for surf fishing again all depends on the budget. This penn slammer III wont be available until the fall but it sounds decent. Another option is the shimano Ultegra xsc which goes for around $180. Again you could spend the money and buy a van staal for $500-600 and have a reel that will last for a very very long time that will withstand the beating of the surf. I hope this helped.
Hi. I don’t know much about the Penn slammer. But a Penn ssv5500 would go great on a 9″ surf spinning rod. I would recommend a St. Croix Mojo 9″. Your probably looking at a pricetag of around $330-$360..
Jeanie, your local tackle shop is the best option for you. Make sure you have an idea of where and how your husband likes to fish and they’ll give you plenty of suggestions. Hope that helps. Lucky guy, great gift!!!
A good rod with a great price will be the tsunami airwave elite. 9’6″, 10’6 or 11′. It depends what he targets and the weigh of the lures. For a reel I recommend the pen clash. Is lightweight and it will give you distance. It is not a dunk able reel, so if you are planning to get it wet, then I’ll use a penn spin-fisher or the shimano spheros. Hope that helps
Go with a shimano reel for sure. Unbeatable for quality and price. I prefer st. Croix and lamiglass rods but the tsunami air wave ($110.00) has become a favorite as well.
Get the spinfisher v. All the kinks have been worked out, good reel. Never buy any reel when it first comes out cause its gonna have a ton of problems.
Penn have been great here in the surf, I fish with 2 every week on padre Island… Landed shark and big stingray with no problems… Cast excellent
Jeanine, I’m no pro…just a guy who’s surf fished all his life from the Cape Cod Canal to the shores of Tampa Bay. I do most of my fishing along the Jersey Shore. The range of quality in surf rods and reels is very broad, from pure junk to pure gold. You can’t go wrong with a Penn reel and the Slammer III looks like a good choice. Match it to a 10ft or 11ft Tsunami Air Wave, or more expensive Lamiglas 1322-2 and he’s set for years to come. Hope that helps.
What size slammer for surf fishing
I can’t find specs or price on this new reel any where. Sounds and looks like a great reel. Jeanine, is he fishing for stripers and blues? Boat or shore? The Shimano Saragosa is great at $300. A nice rod will be another 200-400 bucks. Its worth it if you fish alot. A cheaper set up will be just fine until he hooks up on a cow. I can already picture a high demand for this Penn Slammer, so might be hard to get your hands on at first.
The slammer 3 wont be out till early fall my local baitshop will have them coming in once they are realeased
[…] slammer iii Looks interesting. http://www.onthewater.com/first-look-penn-slammer-iii/ googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-13'); […]
A decent reel usually start at minimum a $150 and you definitely get what you pay for. If your willing to spend $400 on a reel go with the new Van Staal model that costs $399 its well worth it and then you can get him a 10 ft surf rod by tsunami, penn, or lamiglass depending on your budget but in my eyes a quality reel is more important than a crazy expensive reel.
Jeanine go to a GOOD tackle shop (like say Surfland on Plum Island) there you will be treated with respect and honesty, they have been in business for over 50 years. They have rod and reel couple’s from $70 to $400.There guidance will be satisfactory from an money and longevity standpoint. They will give you all the old time service you will ever need.
Great advice. I went there after i sold a junker car wanting to be a $400.00 reel. They had it in stock but talked me into spending $150.00 on another reel of equal quality instead. At the time I was stranger to them so I really felt like they didn’t have to do that. Shows how honest they are.
Personally I like Penn reels and have used than since the late 70’s. I find that Penn reels are a bit more expensive but the durability is beyond every other reel I ever used. I am looking forward to purchasing a new Slammer III or two. My hope is they have a reel that lives up to the Penn reputation. We’ll see…
