Bluefin tuna fishing is starting to pick up in the waters off Cape Cod, New York and New Jersey

White marlin reports have already come from the canyons off New Jersey. The billfish weren’t alone, however. Small to mid-size yellowfin attacked trolling spreads as well, giving anglers a great excuse to make an early season run to the edge.

The bluefin tuna season has officially begun on Cape Cod where Captain Dom Petrarca caught his first of the year on Thursday. Rumblings of bluefin off New York and New Jersey may attract some angler interest as soon as weather conditions allow.

Shark season is heating up in New Jersey and a 157 pound mako was weighed in Cape May this week. Look for sharkin’ in the Garden State to peak over the next couple weeks as more makos and threshers show up on midshore humps to dine on bluefish and bunker.
