Chatham and Provincetown both have good bluefin tuna bites nearby. The Chatham fish have been blasting halfbeaks out of the water and creating great casting opportunities for run-and-gun fishermen tossing weightless soft-plastic lures. Live bait in Cape Cod Bay has produced a couple giants and a 900-pound-plus giant was caught in the Shipping Lanes this week reported Dan from the Hook Up in Orleans.

Last week saw an increase in tuna action offshore in southern Maine.  Highlights included busting bluefin from the Isle of Shoals north to Casco Bay.  Nick Masi of Biddeford was rewarded for his hard work with a quality 80-inch giant bluefin tuna, a feat that couldn’t have happened without the support of his friend Paul Provencher who went out to retrieve Nick after he experienced some engine problems.

Canyons

The Viking Fleet’s offshore season also continues to impress. The latest trip got back to the dock earlier this week with some interesting developments. The albacore tuna were out there waiting in the Canyons, and Captain Steven Jr. Reports that, “It was like lock and load mayhem, the bite was absolutely incredible and our one ton tuna box overflowed.” The tuna were hitting anything that was offered by the anglers on board. When they finally decided they had enough and started to troll home, “The problem was that we couldn’t go anywhere because as soon as we put the boat in gear the albacores climbed on the lures…two, three and four at a time.” That’s definitely what I’d call a “good problem.”

The chunk bite has also been good in some of the southern canyons, like Lindenkohl.

The weekend weather doesn’t look ideal for a canyon trip, but it Cape bluefin have been close enough to shore that anglers should still have good shots at them through the weekend.
