The Blues are Back in Town
Even the biggest bluefish detractors can’t help but smile when these fish return in May. The bluefish action, up until this week, was largely spotty – here one day, gone the next – but the lid blew off the fishing this week, and bluefish blitzes have occurred on a daily basis. Much of this is likely due to the screaming south winds we had for a week straight, and though my weathervane was pointing north this morning, I feel somewhat confident we’ll still see some bluefish action through the weekend.

Tyler at Bad Fish Outfitters in Falmouth suggested Oregon Beach and Popponsesset as places to look for the razor-lipped devils from shore. L’Hommedieu Shoal has been the boat-fishing bluefish hotspot. West Dennis beach has had the blues, and the crowds as well, according to Roy Leyva at Riverview Bait and Tackle.
A tremendous amount of bait off the south side has been holding the blues there. Barry from Red Top Sporting Goods said the blues have been upchucking squid. Roy at Riverview added butterfish and herring to the list of baitfish the blues have been devouring.
With all that bait, the blues have been fat. Roy said some of the fish have been in the 10- to 11-pound range, while most have fallen between 3 and 7 pounds.
Buzzards Bay has had some bluefish too. Tyler at Bad Fish said the big blues have been invading Megansett Harbor after sundown.
Out toward New Bedford, bluefishing has been quiet according to Eric at CMS Tackle. Anglers haven’t seemed to notice however, as the striper fishing in that area has been fantastic. Eric said small keepers are spread from Westport to the Canal, and topwaters and soft-plastic stickbaits have been the ticket. Eric couldn’t pin down any one hotspot, saying the action has been pretty steady throughout the entire area.
The Canal cooled off, predictably, after last week’s set of “breaking” tides, but new fish are already filtering in. Barry at Red Top in Buzzard’s Bay said there was a flurry of action Thursday morning, both at the East and West ends of the Canal. There was at least one monster taken from the Big Ditch this week, as a cell phone shot of a 45-pounder caught near the Railroad Bridge circulated through our office this week. The fish fell for a mackerel bait fished at 3:00 in the afternoon.
Barnstable Harbor continues to be hot, both inside the harbor with artificials, and at the mouth with live macks. The live macks holding at the mouth of the harbor are easily jigged and then switched to a live-bait rig for some keeper-size bass. Bass in the 20-pound class are letting anglers hear their drags.
Capt. Rich at the Hook Up said Cape Cod Bay was the best striper spot this week, saying Billingsgate Shoal was full of stripers, as were the outlets and harbor entrances dumping into Cape Cod Bay. Anglers chunking the bayside beaches in Eastham were turning up some good bass according to Rich.
If there was one fishery rivaling the bluefish this week, it was the black sea bass. These knuckle-headed bottom fish are around in big numbers, with an insane average size of 4 pounds, according to Mike at M and D’s in Wareham. Sea bass up to and above 6 pounds have been taken. Eric at CMS said Cleveland Ledge has been the hot spot for sea bass, though I suspect these fish can be found throughout the lower part of Buzzards Bay, down to the Elizabeth Islands. Just remember, the limit on sea bass is still 10 fish per person. Bishop and Clerk’s Reef is also holding sea bass, along with a smattering of 30-inch stripers according to Tyler at Bad Fish.
Scup are running large as well. Barry at Red Top said fish between 2 and 3 pounds have been the norm. Mike at M and D’s reported on the platter-sized scup as well.
Schoolie stripers are still in the rivers and bays. Roy at Riverview said low tide at the Bass River is the best time to extract a larger specimen from amongst the schoolies.
Trout are still biting according to Roy at Riverview. Powerbait on the bottom has been best with the warming waters slowing down the trout activity and sending them to deeper water. Largemouth bass are wrapping up their spawn and moving off the beds. Some more big fish were caught this week, including a 9.1-pounder by swimbait, by bass aficionado David Lynch. Mike at M and D’s expects the bass to move off the beds by the end of the weekend, and start feeding again.
Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay Fishing Forecast
Cape Cod Bay looks to be the striper hot spot again this weekend. Boat anglers would be wise to try Billingsgate Shoal or the mouth of Barnstable Habor with live macks. Shore anglers can toss artificials or flies in Barnstable Harbor, or chunk bait on the Eastham beaches.
But, if I had to choose a target species this weekend, I’d be caught between the two B’s: black sea bass and bluefish. The allure of a topwater bluefish blitz on the sand beaches of the Southside sounds like a great way to spend the weekend. But, some mammoth sea bass, and the delicious dinner that follows is not to be ignored either. For the sea bass, look to Cleveland Ledge or Bishop and Clerks Reef, or even the 20- to 30-foot depths over live bottom on the backside of the Elizabeths.

I’ll be in Dennis for a wedding memorial day weekend. I’ll be shore fishing. Any advice as to where to start would be appreciated
Hey Chase,
Things change pretty quickly this time of year, but it’s reasonable to expect bass in the canal and in Barnstable Harbor, and bluefish on the beaches on the south side of Dennis. Check back on next week’s report (which will be posted next Thursday) for the latest info on the fishing leading into Memorial Day Weekend
Plymouth bay was hot this’morn…..31 fish before 10 am..7 keepers in the 30 to 34 inch class……forty’s around the corner…..good tide this weekend…so getout there!
waleye; are you fishing on the boat??
Yes,…the “Kiama”……back water bay boat..
Went to South Cape yesterday afternoon to evening…Nothing, Friend went to Poppy today and i was suppose to meet up with him…he left because he was getting nothing after an hour and a half of casting. Will try again tomorrow.
On page 104 of the May 2012 edition of On The Water, there is a picture of a brown fish with a pair of large wings, right above the large blue words “Your Fishing.” What is the fish name. I hooked a few of them while fishing for sea bass. Thanks.
Sea Robin. They are surprisingly good eating as well, though most anglers think of them as a trash fish.
Schoolies and more schoolies….nice to see the big pods coming back!
The fish were a little skid-dish this week-end in plymouth/kingston/duxbury bays. Pulled some cows out of Hobb’s hole on the sebile stick shad. Joe pulled the hook on 40″plus missle! ouch!
Out in buzzards bay saturday killed it bouncing jigs with sea bass. Even had a few big ones hit lures trolled. Had a few big blues but no striped bass this time around. The bay was loaded with pogies so I can’t believe there wasn’t more action from blues and stripers
just curious how long do the macks stick around for or are they always as easily jigged
Hey David,
Usually mid-June marks the back end of the mackerel run around the Canal and lower Cape Cod Bay. Some fish stick around, but not in quite the same numbers as they are right now, especially toward Barnstable Harbor.
Jimmy,
Thanks for responding. That would explain the masses of boats filling up bin after bin of them last weekend.
Hey jim, they may pull out a little earlier this year….they , and the stripers showed up early on the south shore. Catch-em up!
Catch em up… and release the breeders!
Last weekend out by the mouth of the canal in Buzzards Bay we
nailed fish, the biggest a 27 pounder and a couple more in the 20
pound range. There were a lot of boats out there, especially by
Cleveland Ledge where there were hundreds of boats going for
scup and seabass. Caught a few massive scup and it seemed like
the seabass were around too. Back in the ponds in southeastern
plymouth (Little Herring Pond) The water was in the mid 70s and
I took a jump in there for the heck of it. The water was like bath
water, though that pond is pretty shallow and weedy. A lot of Bass
out there but nothing big mostly small ones. They were going
around in schools and surface feeding at night, it was crazy they
would go all over the pond. I did have a big bass smash a live perch
I was using but it snapped my line. The big bass were hard to find
and the big pickerel were too. Caught a massive 8 pound pickerel
out of that pond back in march, It was the size of a pike but you
could tell it was a pickerel because the markings. I probably
could have gotten a state pin for it but too late.
Billy, that big pick. could of been a hybrid…very rare!
Any advice fishing near Harwichport? South side of the cape? Monomoy area too?
Please let me know!
I image that finding structure under water with macs or chucks will kill it.
SSW wind in the morn on the three bays…hitt’in it up at sun-up…and Truther all breeders are always spared…I know you know the best tasting size…lol!
Wind never flipped this morn….stayed east…..jigged up the macks and had some nice screamers…poor joe blew up his favorite reel $$$$ on a big breeder on Bug light. Dont be fooled by the small schoolies….there has been some cows hanging under them. Try a Fin-S in white weighted….3/4 or one oz. seems to do the trick!
so far for me the 2012 fishing season has been great. i am only 14 and fish the canal as much as possible. but i have school so its hard. but i have caught 2 keepers. the biggest so far is 34 inches
Nice job H.T.!! try a sp minnow …looks like a mack, and they slam those! Red Top has’em.
Tight lines!
Three bays fogged-in like pea soup this’morn….should blow out with a change of weather…..waiting to try the new Quantum Cabo on a big cow…..
hey waleye thanks!!
I have actually tried the sp minnow but no luck. my two fish i have caught on a 5 oz bucktail jig and a sebile magic swimmer in white lady color. my dad has been banging fish on the sp minnow!! Yehaah
Tight Lines
Hi,
Am from Quebec, and it’s been almost 20 years I haven’t fished Cape cod ,(used to launch my boat at PAMET RIVER)and I’ll be fishing the same locations………
What can I expect catching in the middle of june: blues? strippers?flukes?
I used to catch lots of blues, mainly trolling , till when they’ll hang in the bay?
Thanks for reading me, I’ve got only one week for fishing and am trying to get the best of it……….
