Offshore Fishing Report 9-20-2012

There’s no new reports coming from the canyons due to the offshore swell, but the last trips which hit the dock before this recent blow went well according to Captain Lou out of Star Island Yacht Club in Montauk. The bigeye bite continues, but some big yellowfin in the 50- to 70-pound range have also shown up, and one captain Lou spoke with this week boated 11 albacore tuna alongside 4 yellows at the Tails. The next weather window approaching later this week should be interesting to say the least. Definitely worth getting some buddies together to charter an offshore 6-pack trip.

Larry Backman and the crew of the Skipjack landed a blue marlin estimated at around 700 pounds out in Veatch Canyon last weekend.

New York and New Jersey Offshore

Just under a week ago, some of the regulars of Tight Lines Bait and Tackle in Sag Harbor got offshore and found good tilefishing in between bigeye and yellowfin bites. The crew ended up with around 18 nice tiles topping out into the high 40-pound class.

The bigeye bite out in the Hudson Canyon has continued through the recent swell, and one of the regulars at Causeway Bait and Tackle who got out recently had 14 bigeyes on the chunk at night and on the troll during the day as well as some nice mahi and a 100-pound class swordfish.

Offshore of New Jersey, a “pick” is just about what those that chose to take a shot ended up with.  A pretty good showing of wahoo for the high speed trollers and spotty reports of whites and tuna.

There have been record number of wahoo ripping up gear and dumping spools at a heart-stopping rate this season.  A Tackle Direct pro-staffer, out solo on his recently reconditioned Seacraft, took down an 80-pound bolt of greasy fast lightening by himself on Saturday.  Warm water and a little determination can certainly make some remarkable things happen.

New England Offshore Fishing Report

In New England, OTW TV found a solid wahoo bite about 50 miles south of Nantucket, returning to the dock with four 30- to 50-pound wahoo! The bites came on deep-diving swimming plugs and high-speed trolling plugs like the Braid Marauder. The key was being on the cold side of a sharp temperature break and targeting buoys and other structure.

Peaked Hill Bar has been producing big time for bluefin off Cape Cod. Live bunker and jigs are working, allowing anglers to mix up their trolling routine a bit. Eric Stewart at the Hook Up in Orleans said he’s eager to get out to see where the tuna have moved since the boats were last able to get out on Monday. Some big fish were showing up including a 112-incher and a 90-incher, both caught on the troll. Eric said an abundance of sharks, both blue and thresher, have made live baiting for tuna too much of a hassle. However, if you are looking for sharks, this sounds like a good problem to have—especially the thresher part!
