Bluefin Red Hot, Canyons Heating Up

Jim at Nelsons Tackle in Provincetown has been watching breaking tuna while standing on the beach at Race Point all week. The tuna have been thick around Race Point and Peaked Hill Bar. Same is true off Chatham. Eric Stewart said the tuna are ranging from 26 inches to 600 pounds. Several year classes of bluefin are feeding out east right now. Eric said there are a few fish out at the BC but the action has been way south of there and will probably push even further south as the month moves on. The fish are here and they are here to feed before they take off. Skirted ballyhoo with ilanders and Bluewater Candy lures have been producing as well as Playaction Splash Bars. The bite has slowed with the moon, but Eric is predicting that it will pick back up.

The northern canyons are on fire. The big yellows and wahoo are biting, and bigeye tuna are still active on the troll. Swordfish are also active to a degree in the canyons.

There are rumbles of a tuna bite out near the Tom’s Canyon, with several of the offshore regulars icing down and getting ready to take a run at it.

Captain Mike Schneider of the charter boat Katie H this week just returned for the Toms Canyon where they loaded up on the yellowfin (70-plus-pound class) and one swordfish.  Captain Mike informed me that the northern canyons seem to have come back to life after a few weeks of lackluster action. Mike said the reports from the Carteret, Hudson and Tom’s all sounded good up through the weekend.

For offshore information in the northern portion of the Garden State, few can beat Dave Arbietman and the crew at the Reel Seat in Brielle. When I spoke with Dave this week, he was all excited about the red hot bite at the northern canyons. He had just got off the line with the Captain of the Jenny Lee who had gone 5 for 6 on bigeye tuna on the troll. No news as to the night bite but good action. They also had a nice wahoo to the side of the boat. Dave also told me the Gambler just came back with 32 50-pound yellowfin from a recent trip to the canyon.

The Helen-H sailed to the canyons out of Hyannis last week, and found a few longfin tuna on the troll, but the overnight fishing was slow.

Fishing in San Diego is RED HOT, 1.5 day trips are getting 185 yellowfin and up to 200 yellotail. The dorado bit is still on with some bluefin mixed in. If you have the cash go to San Diego and go on a 1-2 day trip, doesnt really matter what boat you go on, its just such good fishing wright now. If I had the cash I would be there. My brother went on a 1 day a week ago and caught 21 yellowfin, 2 bluefin, 3 dorado and 4 yellotail!!!. 235 pound of delicious fish, get out there and tight lilnes.
