Despite the date, Cape Cod fishermen certainly aren’t feeling much love from the weatherman lately. Fishable ice has formed and disappeared several times, usually leaving a layer of skim ice too thin to stand on and too wide to fish around. Then there was a blizzard, followed by rain, followed by more snow, and then most recently followed by mild temperatures that weakened what little ice could still support fishing. Understandably, there has been little to no fishing activity on Cape Cod of late.
Temperatures in the 40s are forecasted to continue until Saturday’s rain/snow shower. That means, if you’re hoping to do any fishing this weekend, plan on seeking open water. Large trout ponds ought to be opened up enough to allow for some spoon slinging or shiner dunking. There’s a rumor floating around the Hook Up in Orleans that more broodstock salmon found their way into Cliff, Peter’s and Sheep ponds by way of MassWildlife. I’ve heard the rumor echoed by a couple sources, but lack any confirmation. Either way, those ponds belong at the top of your list this weekend, if not for the salmon, than for their robust trout populations.
Some shallow ponds will be opening up as well. Pickerel will most definitely be active, and largemouth bass aren’t likely to pass up a shiner suspended below a float.
Panfish too will be chowing down. Last year I had a great day in late February fishing small jigs under a float and catching bluegill and perch one after another.
If you’re content with waiting a couple weeks for better weather, you can always get your fishing fix by checking out OTW TV on Sunday morning at 10:30 am. This week’s episode showcases a rare opportunity to target wahoo here in the Northeast.
Also, Eric Stewart reminded me that the Big Game Bash is next weekend, February 22 and 23. Anglers looking to make the most of their 2013 offshore season will benefit from the event’s seminars, workshop, and tackle deals.

Time to make a boat to do list…between ice fishing of course!.
