Long Island anglers are suffering from a lack of options right now. With most inshore saltwater species out of season, it leaves only cod and ling for the bottom fishing crowd, and lately, the cod fishing has been slow.

Over the weekend, most boats struggled to find good fishing. The cod were present, but failed to feed. The Viking saw an uptick in the action on Monday, but the fishing was far from red hot.
The best report from the weekend was the Viking’s March 1 Tile and Hake Express trip, where they landed golden tilefish to 45 pounds, wreckfish to 20 pounds, and hake and barrellfish. Check out vikingfleet.com for their deepwater fishing schedule if you’re interested in targeting tiles.
Freshwater fishing remains the only other option right now. Pickerel are close to a sure thing in many waters. Pickerel are feeding heavily in march, and a shiny spoon, spinner or stickbait will definitely get their attention.
Carp should be stirring as well, and white perch will happily take a grass shrimp or jig fished in the brackish waters.
Spring is right around the corner, and with it, the first wave of migrating stripers, bluefish and winter flounder.

that's me with my trout.
