Memorial Weekend and the official start to summer is finally here!
Long Island North Shore Fishing Report
Cow Harbor Bait and Tackle reported that the porgy bite has turned on locally with a good amount of fish being caught with many jumbo fish. Areas such as Smithtown Reef and Cold Spring Harbor have been the best places to try for some scup. There have been some bunker hanging around outside the harbors, and anglers have been catching some big bass with them. The fluke bite is very good right now in the area of buoy 13, the triangle and Centerport Channel.
Terminal Tackle reported that the fluke bite is you best bet right now. Many of the normal spots such as Smithtown Bay, the golf course and the mouth of the river are seeing fish to 7 pounds. The porgy bite is very good right now with anglers scoring with fish from the beach to 2 pounds. On the striped bass scene, there are plenty of schoolies on the beach, but consistent action with large fish is spotty. Best bet for larger bass would be to try inside the harbors using live bunker or chunks.
Robert at Hi Hook Bait and Tackle said the bass action is very good with fish to 40 pounds being caught by those anglers using bunker as bait. The troll bite has slowed from last week but anglers trolling in the Triangle are still catching some nice fish.
Bill at Jamesport Bait and Tackle said fishing is excellent right now with the action not only good in the bay, but the Sound has started to turn on as well. Bass, blues, porgies and fluke are being caught off of buoy 5 and Hortons Point. In the bay, anglers are catching jumbo porgies, lots of weakfish and fluke.
Captain Mike from the Prime Time III said the bass bite has improved, with anglers catching limits to 30 lbs. Fluke fishing has also improved with many fish to 7lbs being caught. And the big story is the porgy fishing. Limits are a norm, and fish over three pounds are very common.

Metro New York Fishing Report
John at Jacks Bait and Tackle said everything is very good right now. There are plenty of bass and blues being caught on bunker. His rental boat customers have not had to go very far to catch their limits of porgies, as the action is right behind the shop. They are also seeing a lot of fluke with a good amount of keepers around the areas of Prospect and Sands Points.
Louie at Island Bait and Tackle said the night bass bite is hot right now. Those tossing chunks or live lining bunker have been doing very well in Hempstead Bay, Rye and near buoy 42. Those looking for bass during the day have been doing well plugging or using worms around the bridges. Anglers are doing well with fluke, with a good amount of keepers being caught to 7 pounds from in front of the shop, Prospect Point, and section 13.
Bernies Fishing Tackle reported a good fluke bite happening at the Marine Park Bridge and some larger fish are being caught at Breezy Point. The bass bite is very good right now through out the bay. Anglers live-lining bunker or using chunks have been regularly catching fish to 20 pounds with several fish to 50 pounds being weighed in.
Stella Maris Bait and Tackle said that there are cocktail blues everywhere right now and both anglers from shore and boats are enjoying the action. Floyd Bennett Field, Canarsie Pier (which is now open) and the Radar Pier have been producing nice bass on bunker chunks. Fluke are abundant throughout the bay, but it seems a new body of small fish has moved in. There are still plenty of keepers being caught, just have to work a little harder to get them.
South Shore Long Island Fishing Report
Trophy Tackle reported that fishing is great, with anything you want to catch that is in season is here! Bass, blues, weakfish, fluke and blowfish are being caught through out the bay.
Chasing Tails Bait and Tackle reported that bluefish have inundated the Bay from Bellport to Fire Island. The North side of the Bay is also seeing lots of Stripers on the local docks, along with plenty of Blues. Hecksher Flats West of Buoy 8, Buoy 17 Ocean Beach and Buoy 15 by Flynn’s is stacked with nice Weakfish that are taking bucktails and jelly worms. There are plenty of Blowfish hanging out by the 15 and 17 cans, also in the pocket at Sore Thumb. Flounder are at the Sore Thumb as well up to 2.5 pounds taking Sandworms. Frank and his Crew went to the local wrecks on Saturday and scored some nice Cod, Ling and Fluke. Fluke fishing has picked up greatly with fish to 8 pounds being caught on Bucktails and Squid & Spearing combo.
Bay Park Fishing Station also reported good action all around. Anglers trolling bunkers spoons outside of Debs Inlet in ~50 feet of water are doing very well on bass to 30 pounds. Those anglers finding the bunker schools in the ocean have also doing well on large bass. Anglers fishing the AB Bridge have also been catching a good amount of fluke and bass. On the offshore scene, cod to 25 pounds, pollock to 22 pounds, ling, golden tiles to 20 ppounds and blueline tiles to 10 pounds were caught by anglers venturing out to the canyon, as well as blue sharks to 200 pounds.
White Water Outfitters reported that fishing is great right now. There is plenty of action in both bays with fluke, weakfish, bass, blues and porgies eagerly awaiting anglers.
Paulies Tackle of Montauk said both bass and fluke fishing has picked up, when anglers can get out. This last week the point was fogged in, which kept many boats at the dock. The surf scene is good right now with fish to 38 lbs. being caught on blucktails and plugs.
Long Island Fishing Report
Fishing is in full swing right now! Bass, blues, weaks, fluke, porgies and blowfish are plentiful and putting smiles on angler’s faces and fresh fish on the dinner table.
If catching a big bass is your goal, then I would start looking for those bunker schools and either live-line/chunk one or try tossing large bunker color plugs.
Fluke fishing in the bay is great right now. Light tackle bucktailing the flats is my favorite and most productive way to catch some fluke. The standard fluke rig with an squid/spearing combo works great too, but try adding a high hook to try and target the abundance of weakfish that are in the area right now.
The porgy bite is phenomenal. I personally experienced this action while drifting off of Jessups Neck in Peconic Bay last week. In just a couple hours we had a cooler full with big scup to 3.5 lbs. Porgies are too often overlooked, but these scrappy fish put up quite the fight, and at those sizes make for easy filleting.
One this is for sure, if you are not out there, you can’t catch ‘em!
