Offshore Fishing Report 8-15-2013

The offshore bite is red hot for just about all pelagic species. Fishermen heaving south of the Vineyard, down to the canyons are finding big numbers of longfin, mahi, a few bigeye, and even blue marlin and wahoo. In NY and NJ, the tuna bite seems to have moved north with albacore reports coming in from several canyons (Toms, Carteret) and swordfish also in the mix.

According to Reel Life Bait and Tackle in Point Pleasant, the tuna bite seems to have moved north with albacore reports coming in from several canyons (Toms, Carteret) and swordfish also in the mix.

Ronnie at the Fisherman’s Supply Company this week said the tuna had finally worked their way north. Bigeyes were being taken in the Hudson along with blue fins and albacores. The blue fin bite has even slid into the inshore holes. There are definitely mahi in the mix as well so be sure to check their hiding places.

The team from TD was out at the tuna grounds this week and boated a real nice bluefin and a couple mahi for the table. The bigeye tuna bite that has been going on in the deep has got everybody smiling, knowing that every time you go long you have the chance of tangling with a 200#+ monster that simply does not know the word “quit”. I’m fishing with the crew tomorrow morning and will post some post trip info after we get back on where we connected… I promise it will be worth looking back at the report for before the weekend.

The Carteret has had both swordfish and some really nice long fin tuna action this week. Rich from the Jersey Hooker had some charter fun recently with Mahi at the Lobster pots. Fish were from chicken size all the way up to gaff-able.

The Hyper Striper, captained by Pete Wagner, has also had some success lately chasing Bluefin tuna as they are starting to move into the northern inshore lumps.

The offshore bite is red hot for just about all pelagic species. Fishermen heaving south of the Vineyard, down to the canyons are finding big numbers of longfin, mahi, a few bigeye, and even blue marlin and wahoo. Closer to home, the bluefin are biting well at the Regal Sword. Captain Eric Stewart of the Hook-Up in Orleans had an 82-incher on Thursday morning, as well as a 50-incher. It seems as though some “smaller” tuna in the 50- to 60-inch range (as compared to the 70- to 80-inchers that have been most abundant this season), have moved in. Stewart also trolled up a 48-, 50-, and 62-inch tuna on Wednesday.
