The Helen H out of Hyannis, MA had a good trip to the canyons this week, taking a number of good-size yellowfin on the troll. The night bite was good with bait, but getting fish to bite jigs proved difficult.
The bluefin tuna action is still concentrated on the Regal Sword reported Dan at The Hook Up. Captain Eric Stewart trolled up a 60-incher on Wednesday, and caught a mako shark out there Saturday. Other boats have been hooking up as well. However, at this point, it’s not looking good for the numbers of smaller tuna to move closer to the Cape, as they usually do in the fall. Captain Eric said if it doesn’t happen by the new moon on October 4, it isn’t going to.
Giant tuna have also started showing up. A 120-inch fish was taken this week.

Tom Wolfe at Jersey Tackle in Brick is dialed into the Longfin and Yellowfin in the Hudson right now with some Big Eye surprises also. Good action near the 100 Square too.
The Gambler had some offshore success over the weekend but not what I would call “lit up”. Wind and weather seems to have had an adverse effect on the bite. John at the Reel Seat in Brielle thinks a few days of favorable weather should turn it back on.
Jigging the midshore structures is still producing bluefin, but high winds have made for tough drifts. The fish seem to be right near the bottom feeding on sand eels.
