Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay Fishing Report 2-13-14

Think warm thoughts. The sooner the ice gets off these ponds, the sooner we can really start fishing on Cape Cod. Consider making a road trip this weekend or staying home and organizing your gear and changing out your hooks, line and other tackle in preparation for the spring striper run. Just two months before the schoolies start nosing into Cape Cod waters.

Another week, another storm. While parts of the Northeast got pummeled with snow in this week’s winter storm installment, through Thursday, it rained cats and dogs on Cape Cod, not helping anyone’s ice fishing aspirations.

There isn’t much to report on the fishing front for Cape Cod. A road trip off Cape to cash in on some of Central or Western Massachusetts Ice might be in order. Check with Ron Powers’ report on that front. The cod fishing off Rhode Island has improved, but the seas look a little big this weekend, so the headboats may be docked. Check out Will Sirotnak’s report for more details on the cod and other goings on in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

There was 5 inches of ice in plymouth over the weekend. we fished just before the storm and during the beggining of the storm and went through over 3 dozen pike shiners. we sent someone to the bait shop to buy more bait because we were catching so many fish. the best fish we caught were two 5lb bass , two 4lb bass, two 24in pickreel, a 1.4lb white perch, and 40 yellow perch. we also lost a bigger bass that had to be over 6 pounds. it was one of the best days we had ice fishing in a long time.

Anyone know of any ponds without ice or with little ice? I am heading down on Wednesday (the beginning of the warm up) and was really hoping to get in some open water trout fishing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
