North Shore Long Island Fishing Report
John at Terminal Tackle in Kings Park reported that a few trout have been caught at White’s Pool and in a few creeks that haven’t frozen over, although it’s not what you would call spectacular fishing. The weather has made it hard for anglers to get out and find open water, but there were a few fishable days last week where a couple guys were able to get their lines wet.
John also wanted to let everyone know that their 2014 product catalog is out and you can stop by the shop to pick one up. It contains all of the things they carry in store that you will need for the upcoming fishing season. They also do custom rod building and will be happy to guide any of their customers who are interested in making their own rods and lures.
South Shore Long Island Fishing Report
Mike over at White Water Outfitters in Hampton Bays said the cod fishing held up this past weekend, with plenty of ling and pollock mixed in to make for a good catch. The weather over the weekend finally cooperated, and Mike said the Hampton Lady, as well as most of the other boats that got out across the South Shore, had smooth sailing and nice hauls on Saturday and Sunday.
Metro Long Island Fishing Report
Metro area fishing has been pretty pitiful the last few weeks, especially since the herring are not even around. However, Frank at Bernie’s Fishing Tackle in Brooklyn reported that a few of his customers have had some luck up the East River catching small schoolies between 14-15 inches. They have been tossing 1oz leadheads with white grubs in between the docks, barges, and anywhere else that there is a break in the water.
East End Long Island Fishing Report
The fishing was pretty decent out of Montauk this week. Greg at Causeway Bait and Tackle in Wantagh told us that the Viking Fleet went out for a tilefish and wreckfish trip, and the boat had a nice mixed haul. While the tilefishing wasn’t spectacular, anglers pulled up some quality fish up to 25 lbs. There were also plenty of wreckfish, barrelfish, and hake to make up for the mediocre tile catch.

The cod, pollock, and ling were also biting on the East End, with fish over 11 pounds coming over the rails, and everyone went home with fillets.
Best Bets for the Weekend
The weekend is looking quite nice with temperatures reaching a balmy 50 degrees in some areas, and it looks like spring might actually be trying to come after all. The cod fishing seems to be getting better each week, and anglers should take advantage of the favorable weather while it’s here. There will be tilefishing trips coming up within the next few weeks also, and if you are willing to take a long trip, it is something to different to try.
If you would rather stay indoors this weekend, the Suffolk Boat Show at Suffolk County Community College Brentwood Campus kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday.
