North Shore Long Island Fishing Report
Things this week aren’t looking much better from last week. However, John over at Terminal Tackle in Kings Park said that the ice has finally cleared out of the harbor, making it easier for anyone wanting to get out exploring after being locked up during this long winter.
John was also watching as birds were picking off herring on the water the other day, which means that fish are in the area, but understandably no one has been out fishing for them with the weather being the way it is. He said with the water temperatures slowly rising, Northport Harbor, Huntington Harbor, and the Centerport dam are all good places to try for some herring if we get a break in the weather.
South Shore Long Island Fishing Report
Mike at White Water Outfitters in Hampton Bays said that it was pretty windy this past week, so not a lot of cod boats got out across the South Shore. From the few reports I have heard from boats that made it out, the fishing wasn’t spectacular, but a few decent cod, pollock, and ling were caught during the trips. Unfortunately, the rewards have been small for such a long day out on the water.
Dan at Causeway Bait and Tackle in Wantagh didn’t have much better news for us, but he said they are just waiting for the trout to get stocked sometime next week for the April 1st opener of the season.
Metro Long Island Fishing Report
Jimmy at Bernie’s Fishing Tackle in Brooklyn said it has been pretty slow over in their area and they haven’t heard of much action other than a few herring caught here and there.
Joe at Stella Maris didn’t hear much coming from the cod grounds either, but said that the Marilyn Jean IV will be heading out of Sheepshead Bay for its first spring trip this Saturday for ling and cod, weather permitting.
East End Long Island Fishing Report
The East End was very quiet this week, with heavy wind and wave action cancelling a good portion of the cod and tilefish trips. There are boats scheduled to sail this weekend if the weather will let them get off the dock.
Best Bets for the Weekend
The wind lately has been killing us on the fishing front, and I’m hoping it won’t be a factor this weekend. However, that might be wishful thinking with 20mph winds forecasted for the next few days. There are upcoming cod trips scheduled on the South Shore and East End if they are able to get out.
This is also a good time of year to start really seeing what’s happening on the freshwater front. You might find some action on the shallow edges that have been sitting in the sun and warming up all day. After all, the calendar says it’s officially spring, so things should start to pick up very soon.
