North Shore Long Island Fishing Forecast
John at Terminal Tackle in Kings Park said the trout have been pretty cooperative for those anglers fishing for them at the stocked locations, including White’s Pool and Twin Ponds in Centerport. Small spinners, worms, and flies seem to be doing the trick.
Robert at Hi Hook Bait & Tackle in Huntington reported decent catches of flounder up to 1.5 lbs at Puppy Cove in Huntington Harbor and all the way in the back of Lloyd Harbor on clams and worms. Heavy chumming has been the key for better numbers of fish. John at Terminal Tackle added that, while the wind has made it tough to get out this week, some flounder have been caught here and there in Northport Harbor, around Duck Island, and in the Nissequogue River.
There haven’t been any reports of stripers yet in the middle of the North Shore, but John let us know that some have been caught in the western Sound at Littleneck Bay, so it should only be a week to 10 days before we see them farther east.
South Shore Long Island Fishing Forecast
Bay Park Fishing Station in Oceanside reported those who are interested and can get out for cod have been rewarded with nice hauls of fish up to 15 lbs on clams at the offshore wrecks.
Joe at Causeway Bait and Tackle in Wantagh said that the flounder fishing has been a bit slow by them, but there have been a few caught off the town docks in the northern parts of the bays.
Bert from White Water Outfitters in Hampton Bays said that alewives, bunker, and grass shrimp are starting to show up in the bays. The schoolies are also moving around and getting hungry in the tidal creeks.
Although there isn’t much fishing action by them, the crew at Captain Kayak in Sayville have been busy getting ready for the upcoming 2014 Kayak Fishing Classic at Jamaica Bay. Captain Jerry said that the tournament runs from May 15 to 18, and registration is open now to sign up.
Metro Long Island Fishing Forecast
John at Hudson Park Bait and Tackle in New Rochelle told us that there are plenty of stripers, including some decent sized ones, being caught up the Hudson on fresh herring and bloodworms. Louie at Island Bait and Tackle in the Bronx reported anglers are catching schoolies around the Pelham Bay Bridge, and Ralph at Bernie’s Fishing Tackle in Brooklyn said a few fish can be found around the Verrazano Bridge as well.
Ralph at Bernie’s also said there are a couple flounder just about everywhere, but back by the train trestle bridge, the 69th Street Pier, and the Plum Beach flats have all been productive. Louie at Island Bait reported flounder up to 18.5 inches caught on sandworms at the Orchard Beach Lagoon and around the Pelham Bay Bridge.
East End Long Island Fishing Forecast
Ben at Star Island Marina in Montauk said that it is still slow on the East End. They sold some bait to those anglers trying to catch flounder from the shore, but no reports had made it back to the shop as of yet.
Fishing Forecast for New York & Long Island
The weather has been tough on us this week with high winds and a little bit of winter showing back up, but the weekend forecast is looking better. On the striper front, western Long Island has been seeing decent numbers of fish, as well as the tidal creeks on the eastern South Shore. Bloodworms seem to be working pretty well, and it shouldn’t be too much longer until they migrate to the middle of the Island.
The North Shore and western Sound seem to be the best spots for flounder right now. Heavy chumming has resulted in better numbers, and the fish are biting on sandworms and clams around structure and over shallow flats. With the temperature hopefully going back to where it is supposed to be, fishing should continue to pick up in the next few weeks.
