Striper Migration Status - May 6th, 2014

Stripers continue to move north after a relatively warm weather weekend across the region. Anglers on the North Shore of Long Island and southeastern Massachusetts have seen the biggest pick up in action over the last few days, including a few schoolies taken on the south side of Cape Cod.

New Jersey

  • Stripers have been spawning in Delaware River. A giant striped bass estimated at 60 pounds was caught and released in April. (photo)
  • Keeper stripers are in the back bays of Southern New Jersey.
  • Sean Feeney landed a 33-pound striper off Northern New Jersey. (photo)
  • Schools of keeper-sized and bigger stripers are moving into Raritan Bay, where jigging and clams are catching fish.

New York

  • Keeper stripers are migrating farther east along the South Shore of Long Island, and the North Shore is beginning to warm up.
  • Large stripers are being caught off Staten Island and up the Hudson River, where the fish are staging to spawn.

New England

  • A growing number of fresh fish, including keepers, are mixing in with holdovers in the Connecticut Rivers.
  • There has been an increase in the number of fresh schoolie stripers along the Rhode Island Coast.
  • Schoolie stripers have been reported from Fairhaven to Onset and on the Cape side of Buzzards Bay.
  • The first reports of fresh schoolies came in on 5/4 from the south side of Martha’s Vineyard and the Woods Hole to Cotuit area.
  • Boston Harbor has holdover fish, but fresh fish are about 1 week away.

Planning on fishing for stripers this year? Make sure you’re signed up for the Striper Cup when the fish come your way!
