For weeks, New Jersey surf fishermen have heard reports of outstanding boat fishing, bunker-and-big bass blitzes, happening just out of their reach. Many were beginning the wonder if the bass wouldn’t hit the surf at all, and would remain offshore as they continued north.
Things started to look up this week, with more bunker schools venturing into the Monmouth County surf. On Thursday afternoon, the big bass found the bunker and pushed them right onto the beach.
There weren’t a ton of fish caught, but they were all big, topped off by a 49-inch, 44-pounder taken by Vegas Vin Spahiu.
Snagging-and-dropping bunker resulted in a number of the fish, but pencil poppers and metal lip swimmers also produced.
