Wayne County Fishing Report
Lake Ontario – Fishing is hot. Things are setting –up temperature wise. Kings are 120 to 140 down 40 feet. They are hitting any colored spoon. Some nice 20 pounders came near Port Bay waters.
Run the wire, boards and riggers.
Browns are still around; however the charter guys are targeting the kings. There are lakers on the bottom over 150 if you want to go after them.
Steelhead are still on top over 150 fow, but the kings are the attraction.
Bays – Only a two week wait for the bass season. The bays right now are producing pike (Sodus) with plenty of panfish and there are still some suspended crappies in Port Bay.
There are four launch sites on Sodus, three on Port Bay, and one on Blind Sodus. East Bay has a small launch site at the north end and a cartop on the south.
If you are visiting you can bring your own boat or rent one on Sodus and Blind Sodus Bays.
Don’t forget the Wayne County 5-Grandslam and Merchants Challenge Youth Derby which is happening right now. Click on Grand slam for more information. The youngsters are starting to catch fish. Don’t miss this great contest.

Erie Canal – Anglers were catching cats on the canal this week. The water level has receded since our flooding two weeks ago. Once bass season starts, the canal will be the hotspot for anglers. There are 5 pounders waiting for you in the Erie.
Oswego River/Lake Ontario Fishing Report
This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning
According to Larry Muroski of Larry’s Oswego Salmon Shop, the water flow 5,750cfs this morning and the fishing is good in the river. Walleye are taking nightcrawlers and leeches from the Utica St. bridge to the cement factory. Bass season opens this weekend and anglers can find them throughout the river and harbor. Crayfish, minnows, crankbaits and plastics will work well. Sheephead are also active taking crayfish. The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are Mandatory Personal Flotation Device (PFD) zones on the Oswego River below the Varick Dam. For more information, view the Oswego County Tourism web site at HYPERLINK www.visitoswegocounty.com and look for the fishing report under fishing and hunting.
Lake Ontario – According to Capt. Kevin Davis of Catch the Drift, we have had a busy few days over the weekend and into this week. The steelhead action has been awesome. We couldn’t keep the UV Wonderbread lure in the water. Lakers, steelhead, rainbows and salmon have all been cooperating. We even needed three nets at one time! On Tuesday we had another productive day with great action for the first three hours then it slowed down.
According to Larry Muroski of Larry’s Oswego Salmon Shop, the lake fishing is very good. Anglers are fishing in 100-200 feet of water with bright colored spoons taking steelhead about 20 feet down from the surface. Salmon are responding to flies, flashers and spoons down about 50-80 feet from the surface.
Salmon River/ Pulaski Area – According to Garrett Brancy of the Douglaston Salmon Run, over the weekend a mixed bag of species was caught to include jack steelhead, jumbo smallmouth, and a bunch of the big browns we stocked a few weeks ago! That action continued into early this week and so have the hatches. Green drakes, BWO’s, suphers, and caddis all had solid showings. Fish were caught on a variety of tackle including spinners, stickbaits, and minnow patterns. Caddis emerger and dry fly patterns #16-18 took a good number of the trout.
Pulaski Area – According to Dave Wood of Woody’s Tackle, the lake fishing in the area seems to be in transition as there is no thermocline set up as yet. Anglers are seeing mostly steelhead action with a few salmon and brown trout mixed in. Spoons are the bait of choice. Suggested area to fish is 60-200 feet of water off Nine Mile Point.
Oneida Lake – After some very steady walleye action, the bite seemed to slow down a bit over the weekend. Anglers are finding some activity in 20-30 feet of water with bucktail jigs, leeches, worm harnesses and sonars working well. There was some good activity reported in about 30 feet of water off Shackleton Shoals on Tuesday. Anglers are finding a night bite from shore casting jigs or stickbaits. There is some action earlier in the day and in the evening in the shallow water off the shoals. Panfish are being taken in shallow water with worms or small jigs working well.
Sandy Pond – According to Dave Wood of Woody’s Tackle – the weeds on the pond are beginning to fill in making it a bit more difficult to fish. Walleyes are spotty but the northern pike bite continues to be very good. Trolling is more difficult in these conditions so plastics or floating a minnow under a bobber are good applications to try.
Fair Haven / Cayuga County Fishing Report
by Werner Stenger
We are still having a good June bite out of Fair Haven. I can only take this as evidence of the success of our net pen program. The best bite on the lake is still a spoon bite from near surface flat lines to riggers up to 60 down over 150 to 200′ of water.
An abundance of steelhead are in the area as well as salmon and lake trout.
Near shore the smallmouth bass are becoming even more active as the water warms.
