The big bass haven’t left and are getting hammered by the large number of boats on the usual spots, but it is the end of July and should be expected. Unfortunately most of the big girls aren’t getting released… limiting out on 40+lbers still appears to be the trend on most of the boats we’ve seen. Smaller fish, the under 20lbers are in tighter around the Island offering great fun on the fly or light tackle – and you don’t have to contend with the crowds. Seabass has definitely picked up with a good mixed of hubcab sized scup, which are delicious when cooked fresh! Fluking still continues to be consistent with some 8lbers weighed in for the various tourneys going on. Offshore has been very consistent on the small Bluefin tuna and sharks – and reports this week have white marlin in the mix. Most of the marlin have been seen on bluefin grounds or by boats sharking. Halfbeaks have also shown up around the Island – the last time this happened the whites were as close as 1 mile from shore. Canyon fishing has Yellowfin and some recent Bigeyes from Block Canyon to West Atlantis.

i wish more people would release the big girls and just take pictures. keep the 20lbs. fish if you have to. but then most anglers egos are bigger than their brains.
It is sad. From the canal to the block. Anglers really just don’t care if the eliminate this fish from the seas. Ignorance and greed is the reason. I’ll bet you most of those fish are being sold in Massachusetts. What can be done short of making it a game fish? I don’t know.
got a nice 48 pounder last week at Southwest ledge and let her go. The smaller ones are better table fair
Absolutely no reason to be keeping fish, if we were all starving or in a time of surplus bass, maybe. Apparently people must have forgotten the late early 80’s, with nothing around until major steps were taken to help the stocks rebound. I wish people would stop with the Me, Me, Me mentality and give something back for future generations without depending on the idiots in the government to step in and make decisions for us.
You’re all idiots.. Then do what I do and stop fishing for bass all together. What’s the point? It’s not a great fighting fish and the meat is nothing to write home about..Fish for Haddok or fluke if you want great tasting fish
I always release my fish but unfortunately sometimes they don’t survive……Last week I spent quite a bit of time chasing floaters that looked like they were gonna make it but did not. It breaks my heart. We unfortunately has to keep a 51 lber. Tried to revive her twice and chased her down………..finally gave up.
Let ’em go let ’em grow. Keep the 20lb’ers if your into eating them but fluke and Black Sea bass taste better. You can take measurements of your bigger fish and have any taxidermist create a life size mount. Just be quick w the tape. -JT
I ‘m not hearing the outrage comming from a source that Promotes the biggest Kill tournment in NE & NY
A change in attitude will come too little too late, as usual.
