Stripers

Getting some good reports from Long Sand Shoal and a few great fish have been pulled from Clinton reef this past week. A lot of anglers are netting and snagging bunker to live line. Schools of scup are showing up and the stripers are right behind them. Of course eels play their usual role in the night time bite. A little tip, if you want big fish, use big bait! Pictured is Joe Diorio with a great striped bass.

Fluke

Fluke fishing has been getting better every day. Getting some strong reports from the Old Lyme area in about 90 feet of water. Anglers have been hooking up with some good fish by bouncing jigs tipped with squid off the bottom. Black sea bass have been an excellent by catch when fluke fishing lately. Pictured is Chris Mappa with two doormats, weighing 10lbs and 7lbs! Chris Staab’s custom squid jigs from Somerset tackle have been a fan favorite. Pink and green were very productive colors.

Black Sea Bass

The action continues as anglers are finding much luck with these colorful fish. Jigging buck tails and diamond jigs tipped with squid strips is the way to go. The quality and quantity of these fish has been reported as being excellent. Great bass are being found close to the ocean floor on or around rock piles/structure, with good reports of fish being found anywhere from 70-100 feet of water. Pictured is Nate Melanson with two great black sea bass.

It is all about flippin’ and pitchin’ soft plastics into dense weeds. The more productive areas are weedlines that drop into deeper, more open water. Mashapaug and Bantam lake also had strong reports of good largemouth being caught. Pictured is Mike “Weensie” Iovino with a great smallmouth and largemouth combo out of Candlewood lake. He says “The secret is in the use of a heavy tungsten bullet weight (I use a 1 oz), which, when pegged to the bait with a bobber stop, causes the bait to sink to the bottom at a rapid rate. As the bait speeds by an unsuspecting bass, it triggers the fish to inhale the bait out of pure instinct.”

Panfish

Panfish action has been hot lately. They can be a lot of fun on the ultra light tackle too. Fishing the shallows in the weeds can be a blast on any lake or pond. There are a ton of great bluegill, crappie and perch hiding in those thick weeds right now. Fishing worms, grubs and even small shiners can produce some serious slabs. The crappie magnet soft plastics paired with a 1/32oz or 1/64oz jig head have been a go to for me and the fish are loving it!
