Offshore Report 8-14-14

New Hampshire

Chad from Dover Marine experienced one of the most gut-wrenching, harrowing lost-fish stories I had ever heard. But in it, there’s promise for you if you aspire to catch that tuna of a lifetime. He hooked what in all probability was a grander bluefin that he grappled with for over 6 hours and even managed to harpoon, but the giant never lost steam.

South of Cape Cod

The bluefin south of the Vineyard slowed down a bit over the weekend, but some boats, particularly those trolling ballyhoo, still hooked up. A strong white and blue marlin bite was reported at Welker Canyon this weekend. Atlantis Canyon is also holding yellowfin and mahi according to one report.

Matthew Czarnecki went south of Martha's Vineyard to the Shipping Lanes and landed this 55-pound wahoo and a number of mahi up to 20 pounds.

Long Island

The offshore bite continues to be solid this week with bluefin and yellowfin at Coimbra, according to Joe at Trophy Tackle in West Babylon, NY. Bay Park also reported makos 20 miles south of Jones on fresh bunker and brown sharks in 65 feet of water feeding on bunker schools.

New Jersey

According to the Jersey Hooker in Brick, the Chicken Canyon has been the place to be if you are looking for bluefin tuna action. Rich suggests putting out some mini green machines or a spreader with some nice lures to get their attention. There have been some nice reports of Big Eye around the Hudson Canyon. If you are want some nice mahi for the table, Rich points to both the Glory and Mud Hole area to fill your meat locker. There have also been some reports of good bluefin bite around the Virginia wreck. Further south, Rich said the action has been tuna and Mahi around the Lobster Claw with some wahoo in the area biting off some spreads. Rich tells me that trolling Clark spoons almost anywhere in deep water should put some nice bonito on the deck. Sounds to me like we are in prime time.
