Southern Pennsylvania Fishing Report 8-14-14

Southern Berks County

Fly fishing in the Tulpehocken Creek (Delayed Harvest-Artificial Lures Only Area) below Blue Marsh has been very productive. Small caddis imitations have been the hot fly; don’t be afraid to go as small as a No. 24 hook. If you decide to try your luck, make sure to fish mornings and evenings to better your chance at success. Rainbows are being caught in the upper section of the creek, with primarily browns being hooked in the lower section. The creek hasn’t been crowded, plenty of room to fish, come out and give it a try!

Bass fishing was good at Blue Marsh Lake over the weekend, with fish being taken on spinner baits and plastics. Try launching out of the PFBC access near Bernville to avoid heavy boat traffic on weekends.

Another area worth a fishing trip is PFBC Kaercher Creek Lake in Hamburg, a smaller lake (electric motors only), with a good number of bass being caught and great for catfish.

Lehigh County

Anglers targeting trout have found success on the Little Lehigh throughout the Parkway.  The pale morning dun hatch has been good in early mornings and has brought the fish to the surface.  Good Smallmouth Bass fishing can be found around the Cementon and Little Gap area with small spinners and crankbaits, as well as live minnows.

Action at Leaser Lake has been very good.  Largemouth Bass, pickerel, and musky are being caught on crankbaits, however, no fish may be kept until June of 2016.

Northampton County

Minsi Lake bass anglers have been doing well around the weed beds using rubber frog imitations and black rubber worms. Panfish anglers also have been doing well using meal worms and small earthworms.

Smallmouth Bass action has picked up considerable on the Delaware River with the recent lower flows.  Small silver spinners and crankbaits have been working well in the area around the scenic overlook and Martins Creek.

All unpowered boats (canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, rowboats, etc) launching or retrieving at PFBC access areas and DCNR state parks or forests must have a current boat registration (issued by any state), or PFBC Use Permit, or DCNR Launch or Mooring Permit.  For more information, visit http://fishandboat.com/registration.htm.
