Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay Fishing Report | September 11, 2014

The albie fishing could turn off in a heartbeat, so that would be my top choice this weekend, followed by the bluefin action off Chatham. For the shorebound, the bluefish in Vineyard Sound or the stripers in the Canal are a good bet.

Cape Cod Canal and Buzzards Bay

The albies hooked into Buzzards Bay this week, and provided good action between Monument Beach and Old Silver Beach. Bluefish are also in Buzzards Bay in big numbers, occasionally fooling and disappointing fishermen hoping to find albies under the diving birds.

The Cape Cod Canal has been pretty good with fish up to 35 inches reported Jill at Red Top Sporting Goods. Mike at M and D’s said the mornings have been the best time to hit the Canal, specifically, the mid-Canal. White pencil poppers and white Sebile Magic Swimmer have been working. Savage Sand Eels are also working for fishermen using jigs.

False albacore have also been spotted as far as the Herring Run in the Canal, though there have been no reports of fishermen hooking them in the Canal.

South Side and Islands

The albies are still getting most of the attention from fishermen on the South Side. The fish are definitely scattering after last week’s melee. Some have been showing up around Monomoy and Chatham, while schools continue to pop up from Hyannis to the Elizabeth Islands. Bluefish are everywhere as well. Fish from snapper size to 3 pounds are terrorizing baitfish schools reported Todd at Falmouth Bait and Tackle.

The tog bite is good, Todd said. Rock piles and wrecks are producing keeper fish on green crabs.

Striper fishing is good along the Elizabeth Islands, especially for fishermen casting eels into the rocks.

The albie bite is great around the Vineyard. Over the weekend, even surfcasters were hooking more than 10 albies a day. One Wednesday, one boat connected with more than 30 false albacore reported Steve at Larry’s Bait and Tackle.

Michael Outwin was able to snag this Little Tunny in Nantucket Sound this week. He reports they were feeding on bait balls of juvenile bay anchovies.

Evening bluefish blitzes have been providing good action, Steve said, and nighttime surfcasting sessions continue to produce quality stripers. With the Martha’s Vineyard Bass and Bluefish Derby starting on Saturday, the surf division could be interesting this year.

Before the northeast blow this week, Steve said the Hooter had big numbers of bonito. When the seas calm down, the bonito could still be out there.

Sea bass fishing is hot and heavy in Nantucket Sound and around Nantucket reported Captain Eric at The Hook Up.

Lower Cape and Cape Cod Bay

A ton of bluefin are off Chatham said Captain Eric Stewart at the Hook Up. The fish are a mix of sizes from 30-inchers to 500-pounders. Captain Rich Haight had a 490-pounder this week on a black squid bar.

Monomoy continues to produce plenty of stripers. Eels have been the bait of choice out there.

The waters are Provincetown are thick with bait, Rich at Nelson’s Tackle reported, and the striper fishing is improving. Live mackerel have been producing 36- to 38-inch bass in recent days. In Cape Cod Bay, rich reported some striper schools feeding in the waters around Truro.

Bluefish action is great from Long Point to Wood End for boat anglers. The fish are running 8 to 12 pounds, and have been blitzing on the surface at times.

Giant tuna have been showing at Peaked Hill Bar, and at least one, a 550-pounder, was taken on Wednesday.

Best Bets for the Weekend

The albie fishing could turn off in a heartbeat, so that would be my top choice this weekend, followed by the bluefin action off Chatham. For the shorebound, the bluefish in Vineyard Sound or the stripers in the Canal are a good bet. When fishing the surf, however, be sure to have some small metals on hand just in case the albies crash the bass and bluefish party.
