False Albacore Invasion | Sep 3-6, 2014

Acres of albies have invaded the south coast of Cape Cod from Nobska Light all the way to Monomoy. Nearly every day last week had reports of blitzing fish within a few miles of the coast.

Acres of albies have invaded the south coast of Cape Cod from Nobska Light all the way to Monomoy. Nearly every day last week had reports of blitzing fish within a few miles of the coast.

OTW staffers fished off Falmouth on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, and reported successful outings each time.

Look for birds and peanut bunker spraying into the air. It’s a very active topwater bite, with the fish breaking clear out of the water every time they feed. If you’re in the right area, you’ll know it.

Time of day hasn’t been a significant factor, with fish starting to show within an hour of sunrise and continuing to feed throughout the day.

Casting 3-5″ topwater lures on light spinning gear is the most effective strategy. There haven’t been many reports of anglers catching albies on the troll.

For best results, try Hogy epoxy jigs, Deadly Dicks and small soft plastics like Albie Snax.

You will have to work hard if you want to catch false albacore. The crew on Thursday estimated that they took 100 casts before finally hooking up, so don’t get frustrated if you can’t catch them right away.

The On The Water staff is made up of experienced anglers from across the Northeast who fish local waters year-round. The team brings firsthand, on-the-water experience and regional knowledge to coverage of Northeast fisheries, techniques, seasonal patterns, regulations, and conservation.

We started out Friday with a quick trip after work in Falmouth. We went for the noticeable pods and birds and get away from snapper blues. It was a tough bite but we Landed a couple on soft plastics. Headed in shore and who would think they would be right up against the shore in 8′ of water figured they we’re blues. Sunday morning we we’re back at it out of green harbor. Ended up with prob a dozen albies this time on hogy jigsjigs. When the tide slowed up and the fish we’re up and down to fast to get to them we trolled up a couple with swim Bates. Now instead of waiting or running up on fish in the slow time, we set up in a drift 25-30ft a water. We marked all kinds of fish and figured hey let’s try vertical jigging. We’ll surprisingly it worked! And it was fun so to get a hard hit, say I got something….then the drag screams and its an Albie.

Had charters last Thursday and Friday afternoon. We did well with Albies on both days. It was tougher fishing on Friday with the wind and having to battle through the Bluefish that seem t be mixed in constantly.

Sunday morning we saw plenty of fish, caught a few but they were pretty spooky from all the chasers. The key was to get a way from the crowd.
