13 year old Nick Marshall and his brothers traveled from Encinitas, CA in early August to see their grandparents and were fortunate enough to get in on the epic striped bass bite at Southwest Ledge. Leaving from Touisset Point in Warren, RI, the crew headed south on their 31-foot Rampage Hardhat, stocked with eels and in search of a big keeper striper. Before their trip was over, they hooked into a monster 45-pounder.
“I used live bait eels with braid attached to a 6 ft fluorocarbon leader and a sliding sinker on the leader with circle hooks” Nick said. “I just let it out pretty far and drifted over rocks and ledges.”
He also offered some advice for catching bluefish. “Another technique I used for the bluefish was a diamond jig with an artificial rubber eel at the end and just dropping and jigging up. It’s very efficient if you don’t want to waste your eels on blues when the stripers aren’t biting.”
When Nick and his brothers aren’t on the East Coast catching big stripers, they’re surfing as part of Hurley and Red Bull’s pro staff. Thanks Nick!
