The stripers aren’t gone yet. Around the Cape, fishermen are still catching. However, even with the good striper reports, freshwater is getting tougher to ignore. Big brown trout and big largemouth bass are biting well in the Cape’s ponds.
Cape Cod Canal and Buzzards Bay
Small stripers aplenty in the Canal this week. The fish can be found feeding below flocks of seagulls in the morning hours, regardless of tide. Small bucktails, metals or shads have been the best, but swimming plugs are working as well. A 37-pounder broke through the schoolies to eat a pencil popper on Wednesday morning reported Stan at Red Top, so there are still some large fish around, although they have been few and far between. White has been the color of choice reported Todd at Falmouth Bait and Tackle.
The tog fishing continues to be productive in Buzzards Bay.
South Side and Islands
Stripers are still running the South Side beaches reported Bill at Sports Port. Loop Beach produced a number of schoolies this week and some keepers. The pond outflows should also be producing.
No word of bluefish this week on the South Side. I encountered a couple 10-pound bluefish late last week while looking for stripers along the Falmouth Beaches. The blues hit a large swimming plug just before sunrise.
Cape Cod Bay
All’s quiet on the Outer Cape reported Dan at the Hook Up. Cape Cod Bay is still producing fish. Schoolies for the fly- and plug-casters, and keepers for fishermen using bait, especially off Sandy Neck, reported Bill at Sports Port.
Bluefin
The bluefin that were biting well around the BC Buoy appear to have moved north, reported Dan at the Hook Up. Peaked Hill and the Southeast Corner of Stellwagen have produced some tuna in recent days. Christian at Falmouth Bait and Tackle had a frustrating day on the tuna grounds. He saw plenty of fish and plenty of bait, but the tuna avoided the lures all day.
Freshwater
Todd at Falmouth Bait and Tackle described the freshwater fishing as “on fire.” Largemouth bass are feeding well, and fish up to 6 pounds are being caught from the Cape ponds. Trout are biting like crazy. Sheeps Pond has been especially hot reported Dan at the Hook Up, who took a 23-inch brown trout there this week. Ashumet Pond has also been good, with one angler reporting catching 30 trout there in a single day.
Another fall favorite is the pickerel. These fish go on a feeding spree as the water cools.
Best Bet for the Weekend
The above was the good news, the bad news is there is some weather and a big temperature drop headed our way after Halloween. This could be all she wrote for the bass fishing, or it could push in the fish rumored to still be feeding on the North Shore. The Canal or the South Side will be the places to look. If the winds hit the levels forecasted, expect more dirty water in the Big Ditch. The South Side should remain clean.
Don’t overlook the freshwater. This is your best chance of the year to take a big brown trout. When the cold weather really sets in, most of these browns will return to deep water and be much more difficult to catch.

Great way to end the fishing season with that striper pictured above … you can watch the catch and release on Youtube here … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAkvFTVv2IA … thanks for posting!
Nice fish Tom! Nice video too. Congrats
