To say that the bite is on fire here in Cape Cod would be an understatement. With the the historically cold winter and ensuing cold summer with awful weather the bite here was admittedly slow. There were several weeks where the smaller tuna were happy to cooperate in July, but other than a few trophy sized fish the numbers were way down from our norm…until the month of September rolled in and the Cape lit up. Staggering amounts of all different sized bluefin have piled into our waters, and are putting on a NAT-GEO worthy show just a few feet away from the bow.
Yesterday’s trip saw a slight change to our pattern, and arriving on scene the immediate feeling was grim, as the water had moved, and the life along with it. A few radio calls amongst our little core of light tackle boats confirmed that things had changed, so the fleet began it’s search. Capt. Bobby Rice from Reel Deal Fishing Charters went SE, the Dusky went NE, while Capt. Alan from Got Stryper Baits headed NW. Alan was able to track down some elusive tuna that were difficult to stay on, moving at a very fast clip in his direction. We continued our search but came up empty, all the while hearing Alan and his frustrations with near misses, and one broken leader on a hookup the few times they presented an opportunity to take a shot. After staying on the fish like a bloodhound, he basically put the entire fleet on the bite when the tuna finally settled in after 8 miles and began their feed. So important to have trustworthy intel from a friendly, it’s a big ocean! Big thanks from our crew for the ensuing carnage that resulted from him calling us in.

We approached the life from the north, upwind and a short ways from the obviously building life just down sea from the bow, but out of range for just a little bit as we waited for the right time to start our fun. After that we just simply did our thing while the fish did theirs, intercepting Mother Nature and abruptly inserting our presence into their daily routine, and becoming a factor right away.
The next 2 hours were spent watching blow up after blow up, boil after boil, and just utter Artificial Madness at its finest. The fish were all over everything, but with so much natural bait almost impossible to get them to really fully commit. We missed too many to count, but had 10 solid bites on metal, plastic, wood, and rubber, completing the artificial grand slam on quality bluefin! Took the over, both unders, and tagged a few more, with almost no other boats around. It just doesn’t get any better. Unfortunately the weather will give the fish and this captain a little rest for a few days, but back at it as soon as we can. Looking forward to a sick fall run, with all the right pieces of the puzzle in place.

Your best bet at finding tuna is to be on one of boats in the Coastal Charters fleet. Period.
