I don’t know about everybody else, but lately, I’ve been spending entirely too much time with my shovel and not nearly enough time with my fishing gear. With more snow on the way for Cape Cod, looks like there’s more shoveling ahead this weekend. Some fishermen have been hitting the ice, and there have even been rumors of cod showing up within range of Cape-based boats.

If you’re looking to do some ice fishing, you might want to bring a snow-blower with you, suggested AJ at Red Top Sporting Goods. Besides some trout coming from Peters and Marys ponds, AJ hadn’t heard very much.
Christian at Falmouth Bait and Tackle reported that the ice is good, but access is bad, keeping many anglers off the hardwater. Fishermen have been finding there way onto Ashumet, Grews, Deep and Mares ponds. One customer has been buying large shiners to target big brown trout. He didn’t say where, but he’s been doing well with the holdover trout.
Christian also heard of cod holding on some of the high spots past Noman’s Island. He didn’t have many details, but said fishermen leaving from the Cape have been getting into codfish. The action isn’t hot and heavy, but there have been enough keepers to make it worth the trip.
According to the report from Goose Hummock, ice fishing has been good for trout and big pickerel. There have also been some quality bass reported, including a 6-pound-plus largemouth and a 4.5-pound smallie. Wequaquet is giving up a few pike for the fishermen soaking larger baits.
Best Bets for the Weekend
Ice fishing is the best bet once again this weekend. Adventurous anglers who haven’t winterized their boat could follow up on the rumors of cod on the wrecks and high spots off Nomans. Saturday would be the day for that voyage, as the weather will turn windy and snowy again come Sunday.
