Fishermen didn’t do too much fishing over the weekend thanks to the latest blizzard to hit the Cape, but in the days since, the weather has cleared, and the guys willing to do a little hiking have been having some great action on the ice.

With the prolonged cold, even the larger trout lakes have locked up enough to allow for fishing. Chris at Goose Hummock said fishermen soaking shiners in Sheeps Pond connected with trout and bass in good numbers.

One lucky fisherman caught a 3-pound tiger trout on a jig this week. The location of the catch was not divulged, but it goes to show that the trout ponds are worth a look with a mix of jigs and shiners.

Chris from Goose Hummock hit a pond on Thursday morning and had great fishing for bass to nearly 4 pounds and pickerel to almost 5, with plenty of perch in-between. Jigs were the hot ticket, with shiners under a tip-up providing surprisingly little action. The hot jigs were the small size Lunkerhunt Bento baits and the Rapala Jigging Rap. Chris said the ice is thick, and an Auger is a must for getting through the ice.

AJ at Red Top in Buzzards Bay said the fishing in his area has been slow, with pond access still difficult on account of the snow. There’s rain on the way this weekend, which could clear up some of the pond access. AJ said he didn’t think the rain would have a negative effect on the ice conditions, however. Regardless of what the weather is like, always be sure to check and double-check the ice before venturing out.

Best Bets for the Weekend

Hit the ice! Just plan on hoofing it a bit to get through the snow to some of the ponds. Bring a supply of tip-ups and jigs, as both are producing fish at this time, with the fish actually preferring jigs over live bait on some days. Don’t neglect the trout ponds either. It’s not every year that these lakes lock up enough to allow ice fishing. As always, make safety your priority, and never hit the ice alone.
