“At least someone was catching in the Canal this week,” teased Terry Nugent, after posting on Facebook some incredible images of a juvenile bald eagle surfing some ice floes through the Cape Cod Canal. The eagle had apparently caught and was eating a sea duck.
Unfortunately, most unfeathered fishermen on the Cape can relate more to the duck than the eagle this week. Sloppy roads and some serious snowfall on Thursday kept anglers inside, but the 10 day forecast shows some glimmers of hope. Plenty of days with above freezing temperatures and even some rain could put open water fishing back on the menu within the next two weeks, at least on some of the larger ponds. The smaller ponds remain locked up, and fishermen are still catching fish.
Dan at Goose Hummock reported that fishing on Monday was a little slow, with only a few pickerel and perch to show for his efforts. Dan was planning on shifting gears to target trout on Friday, using small jigs to entice browns and rainbows.
Christian at Falmouth Bait and Tackle had a few folks in to buy shiners, but he hadn’t heard much news on the ice-fishing front this week.
Best Bets for the Weekend
Ice fishing is still the only option on Cape. Hit the small ponds for bass and pickerel and the larger ones for trout. Dan warned that Nickerson State Park remains unplowed, so Cliff Pond is still off-limits. With more snow to deal with, access to ponds may again be an issue, as parking lots shrink with each additional snowstorm. But with warm(er) temperatures on the way and daylight savings time on Sunday, we can definitely see the light at the end of this long, cold, snow-filled tunnel.

Dan u can get in at the other end at that ramp but the edges are opening up as of Monday!!
