Cape Cod Fishing Report for 3-12-2015

This week’s report is still all about the ice. Fishermen seeing the warm temperatures forecast hit the ice in droves last weekend for what could have been the last fishable hardwater.

For the first time in a month-and-a-half, I saw some grass in my front yard as this weeks warmer temperatures did a fine job melting some of the Cape’s snow.  There’s still a lot more snow to melt, and with cold temperatures predicted next week, we can’t say goodbye to winter just yet.

This week’s report is still all about the ice. Fishermen seeing the warm temperatures forecast hit the ice in droves last weekend for what could have been the last fishable hardwater. Stan at Red Top said the shop is totally sold out of tip-ups and other ice-fishing accessories, as more fishermen than ever took to the ice during this never-ending winter. Stan had caught word of a good bite in Plymouth for fishermen looking to catch big pickerel through the ice. Large shiners are the bait of choice, and the pickerel being caught are some of the largest we’ll see all year.

Big perch were the talk of the day at Falmouth Bait and Tackle, where Todd weighed in a 1-pound, 9-ounce perchzilla this week. In addition to the perch, Todd heard rumblings of some decent pike action at Wequaquet over the weekend.

The boys at Goose Hummock got into a nice afternoon flurry on the ice last Sunday. In addition to a good jig bite on perch, tip-ups tempted largemouth to nearly 4 pounds. Elsewhere around the Cape, fishermen iced largemouths to 6.5 pounds this week.

Trout fishing has been okay at Sheeps Pond, but that bite should pick up with the approaching weather.

Open water? Not yet.  I’ve been cruising around the Upper Cape on my lunch break looking for some beautiful blue water, but as of Thursday’s, I haven’t seen any open water yet. The rain coming this weekend could break up the ice enough for open water fishing next week.

Best Bets for the Weekend

It’s a tough call this weekend.  With the “warm” temperatures and rain, ice could be too iffy to fish on this weekend.  Another challenge Cape anglers are going to face as the lakes ice out is pond access.  Some of my favorite ponds still have huge mounds of snow piled at the parking and access spots. Hopefully this weekend’s rain will finish off the ice and snow and by next weekend we’ll be talking about getting ready for the spring trout stocking.

Hey Jimmy, I live in NY, looking to surfcast mid April. What do you think my chances of hooking up are. Thanks, tight lines!
