Cape Cod Fishing Report for 3-26-2015

The open water is out there somewhere, and with Thursday’s rains, there should be enough for fishermen to finally get out this Saturday.

Cape Cod fishing was in limbo during the latter part of this week as most lakes had too much ice for open water fishing but not enough ice for ice fishing. Thursday rains and mild temperatures may open up a few ponds by the weekend, but there is little to report at the moment.

The guys at Goose Hummock made the most of the end of the ice fishing season early this week, hitting some ponds on the Lower Cape and catching big pickerel and bass to 5 pounds. Trout fishing through the ice also ended on a high note early this week with fishermen catching some nice rainbows and browns on jigs tipper with chunks of shiner or nightcrawler.

Todd at Falmouth Bait and Tackle had heard of a swath of open water at Ashumet Pond, but all has been quiet other than that. Another fishermen reported fishing a small section of open water on Johns Pond, but without luck.

Rick Thompson hooked this 22-inch Cape Cod largemouth while jigging for perch with 2-pound-test.

Best Bets for the Weekend

The open water is out there somewhere, and with Thursday’s rains, there should be enough for fishermen to finally get out this Saturday. I think we can declare the ice-fishing season over at last, although if you haven’t had your fill of it yet, you could always head west.

The trout have not been stocked yet, and it’s looking like it will still be a week or more before the hatchery trucks start rolling.

There are definitely some holdovers around in the rivers, both the Weweantic in Wareham and the Bass River in Yarmouth. But for migrating schoolies, probably the last days of April or first week of May before we see them on Cape in any numbers.
