Get out your Powerbait and shine up your spinners, the stocking trucks are rolling on Cape Cod. While not all of the trout ponds have iced out yet, the ones that have received a dose of hungry rainbow trout this week. The full list of ponds stocked this week can be found HERE. This list is updated every Friday, so check back tomorrow to see a listing of which ponds were hit.
Dan at Goose Hummock had the intel on a few ponds that were stocked already, including Bakers, Goose, Herring and Schoolhouse. Jeff at Forestdale Bait and Tackle said Peters and Mashpee-Wakeby ponds were still largely iced over, but he knew Ashumet had been stocked.
Ponds that are iced out, but may not have been stocked, include the ponds in Nickerson State Park. Dan hit Cliff Pond this week after having a banner outing at Baker’s Pond, but had no hits and saw no rises.
Red Powerbait was the hot ticket this week according to Christian at Falmouth Bait and Tackle. Gold Kastmasters were a close second.
There wasn’t much reported on bass fishing this week. Jeff at Forestdale Bait and Tackle reported that most of the small, shallow ponds are open enough to fish. What ice remains should be finished off by Friday’s warm rains.
I hit a shallow Upper Cape Pond this week, throwing my favorite freshwater lures, shallow crankbaits. The water weas cold, but the bass hit the lure hard and fought well. I caught a half-dozen largemouths to about a foot long before numb hands and failing light forced me off the water.
At least a few herring have been spotted, reported Stan at Red Top. While many fishermen are speculating that the striped bass run will be late this year on account of the still cold ocean temperatures, Stan believes the fish will be here on time. “Like every year,” Stan predicted, “the stripers will be here by the time the announce the winner of American Idol.” The date of the singing competition finale is May 12 this year, and it’s a pretty safe bet that the bass will be here by then.
Best Bets for the Weekend
The stripers will be here soon enough. In the meantime, enjoy the trout fishing while it’s at its best. PowerBait is so effective on the fresh stockies, it’s practically cheating. Flashy spoons and spinners will also get the job done.
I clicked on the link for the ponds that have been stocked with trout so far. But there is no ponds listed. Does that just mean that no ponds have been stocked? haha

Went to Spectacle pond, road in to state launching area is blocked by a massive pine tree across the road, I hope someone reads this and makes it a happy reopening.
Any word on folks catching Winter Flounder or Tautog yet?
