Fishing CT Report – June 4, 2015

SALTWATER

Striped bass fishing continued to be amazing here in Connecticut this past week. The mouth of the CT remained a hot spot for consistent action with decent to cow sized bass. We received a ton of rain early this week so the river was high and muddy. This seems to have pushed the fish back a little bit. But the action is still good. Local reefs have given up a few good bass this week as fish seem to be moving out of the rivers. Bunker are still thick in the river and harbors. Though there has been a lot of reports of huge die offs of bunker around, most likely from whirling disease. Either way, there is still plenty of bait to go snag and live line for some bass and blues. But don’t forget that eels are always a good idea, especially after dark. The fluke bite is picking up steadily and better fish are being found. Boats heading out of Norwalk and Greenwhich are seeing more and better fish. A few good ones came from the Brothers 2 area. So it appears that deeper water of 40-60′ are where fish seem to be hanging.

FRESHWATER

We are at the tail end of the spawn for bass on many lakes now so a lot of fish are lean. But there is still a chance at finding some big girls on their beds. Good largemouth were reported from Candlewood, Ball pond, Zoar, Lillinonah, Bantam, Mudge and Coventry. Smallie reports were excellent from Candlewood, Lillinonah, Bantam and the CT river. Crappie action is still being found on Candlewood, Lillinonah, Hatch and Mamanasco, small finesse jigs have been working. Catfish reports were solid from the CT river again this week. Chunked up shad and stink bait are the way to go. Pike reports were slow with a few smaller fish coming from the CT and Lillinonah, but Bantam gave up some 36″ fish. Decent walleye are still coming from Squantz and the Saugatuck reservoir but the bite has cooled off a bit this past week.

Torrey at UpCountry Sportfishing said the subsurface action has been good. Caddis Pupa & Larva in both olive/green & tan #14-18, Hare’s Ear soft hackles #12-16, Golden Stoneflies #6-12, Pheasant Tails #14-20, March Brown/Gray Fox Nymphs #10-14, Fox Squirrel Nymph #10-14, Prince Nymph #12-18. We are starting to see Golden Stonefly nymph husks on the rocks in fast water, so they are active & hatching. Also, the Blue Wing Olives #18-24 have also been out in good numbers. Caddis #14-18 in both olive/green body and Tan body colors have been strong. Winter/Summer Caddis #18-22 have been hatching well in early mornings. Fishing on the Farmington has been excellent as of late. Even with all the rain we got, but high flows can get the big ones chewing too. Trout reports from lakes and ponds were slow other than some okay browns from Candlewood, Squantz and Crystal lake (Ellington).
