Pennsylvania Fishing Report – September 24, 2015

Northwest Region

Crawford County

French Creek

Anglers are catching Smallmouth Bass and Walleye throughout all sections of the creek. Spinners and tubes/jigs seem to be getting the most fish. Due to low water, anglers are targeting the riffles and rapid sections of the creek. Muskies and Northern Pike continue to be caught near Cambridge Springs fishing spinnerbaits and stick baits.

Erie County

Lake Erie

Yellow Perch and Walleye continue to be caught in Lake Erie when it is safe enough to go out. Steelhead continue to stack up near the tributary mouth’s waiting for the creek temperatures to drop. Kayak and boat anglers are beginning to target Steelhead trolling spoons and stick baits near Walnut and Elk Creek.

Venango County

Allegheny River

Kayak and boat anglers continue to report success for Walleye and Smallmouth Bass from Franklin to Fisherman’s Cove. This 10 mile stretch makes for a great fall paddle and usually takes 6-8 hours to complete if you are fishing. Flukes, spinnerbaits, and senkos seem to be the bait of choice for Smallmouth Bass.

Northeast Region

Northern Wayne County

Some very large Smallmouth Bass are being reported from Prompton Dam and Duck Harbor Pond. Heavy jigs fished slow and deep are doing the trick. Crappie and bluegill are active in late afternoon into evening with small jigs or worms suspended from a bobber working the best.

Panfish and pickerel are very active at White Oak Pond and Prompton Dam. As the temperatures cool, make sure to get out and wet a line as the fishing will continue to heat up!

Northcentral Region

Centre County

Penns Creek

With the cool temperatures over the last few days, water temperatures are in the lower 60s.

Best fishing hours are early morning and early-late evening. Anglers have seen a few blue wing olives hatching.

Nymphing has been most productive. Caddis with a stone fly tandem rig has been working well. Wet ant/pheasant tail combinations have also been working. A few other flies that have been working well are tan caddis, hares ear, Kaufman stone and bead head prince nymph.

NOTE: The tunnel at Poe is still closed for repairs.

Spring Creek

Nymphing is still the best technique to use throughout the day. Target the shaded areas during high sun days. Early morning and late evening continue to be the best times on the water.

Most hatches are done for the year; however, a few tricos can be spotted in the mornings. Caddis and midges are still popping around dusk.

Flies that are working best are pheasant tails, tan bird of prey caddis, olive bird of prey caddis, brown zebra midge patterns, walt’s worm and olive scud patterns. Streamers that push water are working well when fished along the banks. Best time for streamer fishing is early morning and early-late evening.

Clinton County

Fishing Creek

Water levels are a little higher this week and there is a little bit of color to the water as well.

The recent rain triggered a few trout to feed and get off the bottom of the stream! Evenings have produced the best time to catch trout on the surface. Caddis and slate drakes are bringing trout to the top (e.g. size 14-16 tan caddis; 10-12 slate drakes; 20-22 midges).

Nymphing is still the best choice during the day. Long leaders and light weight nymphs (e.g. bead head green weenies, pheasant tails and some stone fly).

Southeastern Region

Bucks County

Lake Luxembourg

Anglers are catching Largemouth Bass on crankbaits and spinnerbaits on the upper end of the lake. White Perch and Crappies are taking minnows.

Delaware River

Anglers are catching Smallmouth Bass around Bulls Island and below Frenchtown on minnows, tubes and grubs.

Falls Township Lake

Just some little Largemouth Bass hitting and a few Walleyes have been picked up in the lake.
