Every year some giant bass and trout are taken in December. Falling water temperatures put fish on the feed
We’ve been spoiled with some unseasonably mild weather this week, and it looks like Saturday and Sunday are going to be beautiful.
You could take advantage of that weather by heading to the East End of the Canal and fishing for mackerel suggested Stan at Red Top. The mackerel are biting well on the west-moving tide, and fishermen are hooking up with small metal jigs. Most of the macks are 12 inches, but stan said some 15- to 16-inchers moved in last week.
Some fishermen are still targeting tog, Stan reported. You’ll have to catch your own green crabs, but blackfish are still being caught in 50- to 70-foot depths. Look for rocky ledges or wrecks for these late-season blackfish.
Freshwater fishing is good, Stan reported. Sandy Pond is producing good largemouth fishing, while Peter’s has been the hotspot for trout. Stan heard of some good smallmouth fishing in Plymouth. The smallies are settling into their winter spots over deepwater humps and points. Dropshot rigs and bladebaits have been working best.
Most of the fishermen stopping by Riverview are after trout reported Lee. Worms and shiners are working best on the rainbows and browns being caught in Scargo Pond, Sheeps Pond, and in Nickerson State Park.
Lee also heard that some charter boats out of Hyannis have been doing well on cod, catching a couple-hundred pounds per trip.
Stellwagen Bank gave up a couple December giants this week. As of Wednesday, giant tuna were being caught on the Bank. It’s not unheard of for giant tuna to be caught this time of year, but catching one usually requires the much longer run to George’s Bank.
Best Bets for the Weekend
Saturday looks like a good day to take one last shot at catching a giant tuna on Stellwagen Bank. Besides that, the best options this weekend are either mackerel in the Canal, trout in Peters, Scargo, Cliff or Sheeps ponds, or smallmouth bass in Plymouth.
