Remembering Canal Legend Stan Kuzia

John Stanley “Stan” Kuzia of Sagamore, MA, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the age of 92.  A veteran of the United States Air Force he served during WWII as a tail gunner. He worked for many years as a First Class Machinist in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Upon retirement, Stan relocated to Cape Cod permanently. Here is where he was an avid hunter and fisherman and eventually gained the fisherman’s term of “Canal Legend.” Stan has been featured in numerous newspaper and magazines for his ability to design and hand craft many of the jigs and wooden plugs used today. Stan designed the original buck tail jig which has been copied by many. Stan’s jigs were marketed as the “Ku-Jig”. Stan was also a charter member of the Stan Gibbs Cape Cod Canal Classic which is a prestigious collection of striped bass surf casters. Stan was the club’s “Fisherman Extraordinaire”, hence, the club established and annual tournament in his honor call the “Ku-Jig” Tourney in which the winner with the largest fish receives a silver cup and a set of suspenders which were one of Stan’s trademarks.

I fished along-side Stan in the mid-seventies near the Railroad Bridge at night using eel skins. Stan was a master using this technique…My memories of him and the stripers he caught are etched in my memory forever. Penn Squidders and men like him were the epitome of what striped bass fishing was all about.

Stan was a legend! I met him in 79 at the RR bridge, and he showed me my first yellow polaris , I have one in my box today. and always will. The young guys back then called him the “Bishop” as he mastered every canal lure/plug made. RIP Stan.
