Pennsylvania Fishing Report – September 15, 2016

Anglers continue to report good numbers of smallmouth bass, walleyes and trout using a variety of fly patterns and live bait.

Northwest Region

Clarion County

Kahle Lake

Anglers continue to report some really nice Bluegills, Yellow Perch, and a few Largemouth Bass.

Beaver Creek Ponds Project

Panfish and some Largemouth Bass are being reported.

Upper Clarion River

Anglers continue to report good numbers of Smallmouth Bass and a few Walleyes. All boats, including canoes & kayaks using the PFBC’s Gravel Lick Access Areas must be registered or have a launch permit to use this facility.

Piney Dam

Piney Dam continues to be in a drawdown state and is approximately 6 feet below normal pool levels. Anglers are reporting catching Channel Catfish in good numbers, a few Walleyes and good numbers of Smallmouth Bass. All boats, including canoes & kayaks, using the PFBC’s Mill Creek Access Area must be registered or have a launch permit to use this facility.

Allegheny River

Smallmouth Bass and a few Walleyes are being reported near the Parker islands and the mouth of the Clarion River. Channel Catfish are being caught after dark in good numbers. A few Muskellunge have been reported at the mouth of Redbank Creek. All boats, including canoes & kayaks, using the PFBC’s Parker & Brady’s Bend Access Areas must be registered or have a launch permit to use these facilities.

Redbank Creek

Some Walleyes, Smallmouth Bass and trout are being reported near the dam in New Bethlehem.

Crawford County

Sugar Lake

Anglers are reporting a few Bluegills and Yellow Perch are being caught.

Woodcock Creek Lake

The water levels are very low. The boat dock is out of the water. A few smaller Muskellunge have been recently caught, but fishing has been slow.

French Creek

The water levels have remained low. Some sections will be more difficult to travel.

Central Erie County

Lake Erie

Yellow Perch are being caught in very good numbers off the Condo’s in 60 foot of water. Some anglers are saying the perch are right on the bottom and the others are saying they are anywhere from 5-8 feet off the bottom. Walleye are still being caught pretty regularly but catching them in large numbers is a little tough. Please remember that weather conditions in the fall can change quickly and winds can pick up with little notice so please be cautious.

Northeastern Region

Lackawanna County

Fishing activity over the past week has been greatly reduced but anglers catching fish has increased. A wide variety of fish were caught over the past week including Largemouth Bass, bluegills, perch and the occasional Black Crappie. The PA American Water Company Reservoirs that are open to the public (Maple Lk, Dunmore #1, Griffin Pond, Elmhurst & Curtis) fishing had the most activity. Anglers were catching fish on live bait including worms and live minnows.

Northcentral Region

Tioga County

Pine Creek

The stream is still low. Temperatures are slowly decreasing. Smallmouth Bass are active this week. Anglers are catching them using crayfish and sculpin patterns. Most of the Smallmouth Bass are holding in the deep holes and runs.

Clearfield County

Bimini Lake (Treasure Lake)

Anglers are catching bass using live bait and spinners.

Curwensville Lake

Anglers are catching Yellow Perch, Smallmouth Bass and Bluegill using red worms and meal worms.

Clinton County

Fishing Creek

The water temperature is in the 60’s. Water level is very low and clear. Anglers are catching trout in the early morning and late evening hours using nymphs (e.g. dark stone flies; bead head prince; bead head pheasant tail).

Trout are rising in the late evening hours to caddis, terrestrials and a few Blue Wing Olives. Patterns that are working include: tan caddis; blue wing olives; midges.

Centre County

Black Moshannon Lake

A few kayakers and canoers are utilizing the lake.

Anglers, fishing from shore, are catching bass near the access areas in and along weed beds. Top-water lures are working best.

Foster Joseph Sayers Lake

Boating activity is moderate. All access areas are open and are being utilized. The marina is operating on weekend hours.

Anglers are catching Black Crappie and Yellow Perch under the causeway bridge. The most successful technique is a live minnow fished under a bobber.

In the evening hours, anglers are catching Channel Catfish using chicken livers in the Hunter Run Cut area.

A few anglers are catching bass using spinner bait, rubber worms and plastics.

Spring Creek & Lower Bald Eagle Creek

Anglers are catching trout using a variety of dry fly and/or nymph patterns (e.g. tan caddis; midges; blue wing olives; green weenie; pheasant tail nymph; walt’s worm).

Anglers are also catching trout using live baits.

Anglers using paste baits at the Milesburg bridge are catching trout.

Anglers are catching trout on Spring Creek, Bellefonte Borough, using live bait.

Northumberland County

28 baby snapping turtles
Over the weekend Eric and Audrey woke up to 28 baby snapping turtles swimming in their pool. Once collected, the turtles were released in the Susquehanna River. (photo by WCO Sweppenhiser)
