Cape Cod Fishing Report – October 27, 2016

When the winds allow, the best bet is to get in on the tautog bite in Buzzards Bay.

The saltwater season isn’t over yet on Cape Cod. Fishermen continue to catch stripers, tuna, tog, and even albies in Cape waters.

South Side and Islands Fishing Report

Last week brought the best albie fishing of the season to Martha’s Vineyard, reported Peter at Larrys Tackle. Big numbers moved into Edgartown Harbor, and one fishermen caught 18 of the green-backed speedsters. Albies were caught as recently as Monday morning, Peter reported.

Big bluefish and keeper stripers are also feeding around Edgartown. Schools of adult bunker are holding the bass and blues in the area, and fishing live bunker has been automatic.

Edgartown has been full of life, with squid, butterfish, and silversides adding to the mix of bait holding in the harbor. With all that bait around, you can bet the stripers and blues will be around the Vineyard for a bit longer.

On the South Side of the Cape, things are a little quieter. Keeper-size stripers are still being caught around Popponesset and Cotuit, but the action isn’t as consistent as it was earlier in the month. The bays are still full of peanut bunker, and some adult bunker are around as well.

Cape Cod Canal and Buzzards Bay Fishing Report

A wave of fish moved through the Canal late last week, reported Jacob at Red Top. Most of the fish were small, but a few 20-pound-plus stripers were taken. As of the early part of this week, the bait and bass have mostly cleared out of the Canal. More are likely to move in, however, as reports of stripers continue to come from fishermen north of the Cape.

Bass fishing has been very slow in Woods Hole and along the Elizabeth Islands.

The best action right now is the tog bite in Buzzards Bay. Fish to 11 pounds were taken this week reported Jacob, and limit catches were common. Green crabs are the top bait, but be sure to bring more than you think you’ll need. There are tons of small tog and sea bass around, and they could chew up your bait supply before you have a chance to hook a keeper.

Cape Cod Bay and Outer Cape Fishing Report

There are bluefin tuna on Stellwagen and inside Cape Cod Bay but wind has been keeping fishermen off the water. The tuna were averaging between 50 inches and 70 inches.

Cape Cod Freshwater Fishing Report

Trout fishing continues to be excellent. Power Bait is the fastest way to fill your limit, but lures are working as well. Some big largemouth bass are being caught on jigs and spinnerbaits, two excellent fall lures. Target weedbeds with the spinnerbaits and steep-sloping rocky shorelines with the jigs.

Cape Cod Fishing Forecast

When the winds allow, the best bet is to get in on the tautog bite in Buzzards Bay. Target high-relief rockpiles and wrecks in 20 to 40 feet of water with green crabs. Otherwise, stalk the shorelines with lighter surfcasting tackle and seek out schoolie stripers and perhaps a small keeper from the beaches, focusing on salt ponds and estuaries, as the striper season winds down in the same areas where it began, back in May.
