With summertime weather hanging on, there are still opportunities to get out on the lake and fish, boat and paddle while enjoying fall’s splendor.

Central Erie County

Lake Erie

Anglers are trolling for Steelhead along shore by the mouths of the creeks.

Eastern Steelhead Tributaries

Eastside Streams are low and clear for the most part and few fish are present.

Eastern Erie County

Lake Erie

The Steelhead run is off to a slow start. The streams are very clear and low. Most of the fish that are in the streams have been there for some time. They are spooky and have seen every lure twice now. The long term forecast shows rain, and that will help bring fresh fish into the streams. Make sure to read the summary book as to where you can fish and at what times of the day. Yellow Perch are being caught on Lake Erie in 70 feet of water using minnows. Lake Erie’s water temperature is around 62° F. For current Lake Erie conditions, call Northeast Marina at 814-725-8244.

Inland Waters

The inland waters are starting to cool but it is slow. The Northern Pike and Musky should be starting to feed heavily in waters such as Lake LeBoeuf and Lake Pleasant. Throw plugs and spoons for these fish. Howard Eaton Reservoir is very low and bank fishing is limited.

Warren County

Allegheny River

The best Walleye fishing will be in Warren County on the Allegheny River from Kinzua Dam Tailrace to the Starbrick access area. Fall season is upon us here in Warren County, the temperatures maybe dropping but the fishing is still going strong. Currently, the leaves are turning multiple colors. In the fall, it is a great time to be out on the river. Anglers still have time to get your boats in for some fall fishing. There are a lot of good sized Smallmouth Bass to be caught on the Allegheny River. Anglers are reporting that baitfish is still the best bait for Smallmouth Bass. The stocking of Rainbow Trout in the Allegheny River went well this year; the temperature of the river was 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Come opening day of trout season in 2017, the Allegheny River will have plenty of trout for the anglers. Between the Rainbow Trout, Walleye, Muskellunge and Smallmouth Bass; anglers will have plenty of fishing opportunities to choose from on the Allegheny River.

Northeastern Region

Fall trout stockings are in full swing throughout the region but some dates have recently changed. Please check the online stocking schedule for updates and changes to the stocking list, the stocking schedule can be found at: http://fbweb.pa.gov/stocking/TroutStockingDetails_GIS.aspx

Carbon County County

Fall season has arrived and there is still a good number of fishing opportunities available in the district.  A number of anglers fishing the Pohopoco Creek downstream of Beltzville Lake have reported good success catching trout.  Anglers are reminded that the Pohopoco Creek downstream from the outlet of Beltzville Lake is Class A Trout water. Class A trout waters are catch & release only for trout beginning the day after Labor Day through the opening day of the regular trout season the following year.

Although most streams in the district are flowing low, trout stocked waters such as the Aquashicola Creek, Buckwa Creek, Lizard Creek are still holding a good number of trout.  Anglers fishing the Lehigh River near Parryville and the Bowmanstown area have reported catching some trout measuring 17 inches.  Smallmouth Bass action was also good near the Parryville section of the river.

The water level at Beltzville Lake has been lowered in recent weeks.  The boat launches are open, but boaters may find it difficult launching or retrieving their watercrafts.  Boaters are reminded that since the lake level is low to be on the lookout for fish structures, rocks, logs, that may have been underwater in the past. A few anglers have reported doing well catching catfish during the evenings using chicken liver.  Anglers were also observed catching Largemouth Bass measuring between 16 and 17 inches off the South shore of the lake across from the Pine Run boat launch. Boat anglers appeared to have better success catching striped bass in recent weeks.

Anglers fishing Mauch Chunk Lake have been doing well catching bass, but most are under the legal size of 15 inches.  Mauch Chunk Lake is governed by the Big Bass Waters special regulations.  Boat anglers have been doing well catching nice size bluegills and perch.

Northern Columbia and Luzerne Counties

Warm days and cool nights have set up wonderful conditions for trout anglers at Harveys Lake. Water temperatures are hovering near 59 degrees and fish have been cooperating. In addition to the recently stock browns in the lake the resident trophy browns are moving into shallower water. These larger browns are entering the spawning season and luck will be best had fishing spoons and spinners to elicit a strike. Sunfish and bass are still responding well to bait in area lakes and ponds as they stock up for the coming winter.

Area streams have also been dropping in temperature and this has helped the bite in these moving waters to come into its own. Fall is a great time for fishing the streams. The temperatures are comfortable, the crowds are thin and the view is spectacular.

And don’t put away those paddles just yet. This is the best time in Pennsylvania to canoe and kayak. Whether you are planning a run on a local river or stream or paddling a small state park lake the view couldn’t get better. Consider wearing that life jacket as water temperatures drop and be sure to wear it starting November 1st to comply with state regulations.

Monroe County

Colder night temperatures have turned the trout back on in the stocked trout waters. It appears that small metal spinners are triggering good reaction hits in the early morning and late afternoon.

Susquehanna County

Snapping turtles are hatching in Susquehanna County. Snapping turtles season is open until October 31. A fishing license is required to catch, take, kill, or possess snapping turtles.
