Long Island Fishing Report - February 9, 2017

This time of year, the biggest target for anglers on Long Island is cod and the action out of Montauk is still producing. There have been a mix of good and slow days on the wrecks, but the best seem to be after weather keeps the boats at the docks for a day or two, allowing things to reset and prepare for another solid bite. With the mix of almost spring-like days and bitter cold days like today, things should set up nicely for this weekend.

Jim from Miller Place Bait & Tackle reports that some herring continue to run through the local waters but, like most elsewhere, the bite has slowed down.

The last warm day did bring about some great freshwater fishing weather. Paul from River Bay Outfitters relays that the local rivers and parks have yielded great action for those looking to break out the fly rod. Dry and wet flies have worked well and should continue down that path leading into the springtime.

Keep an eye on the forecast moving forward because days like Wednesday are the perfect time for a winter escape. Hopefully the weather holds back much more snow and opens up early to allow the springtime freshwater to really wake up.
