Fishing on Long Island may not be the first thing on everyone’s mind this time of year but the weather has been unusually kind lately and has allowed for the brave few to find success. Herring are still running in some places, though not in the same numbers they had been, and cod fishing has had mixed results. However, any day out on the water is a day well spent.
Jim from Miller Place Bait & Tackle reports that anglers continue to pick at herring running inside of Mt. Saini Harbor. The bite is not constant and can be a bit of a guessing game, as most fishing is, but if you’re looking for some slow season action to spend some time, the herring are worth a try.
In Hampton Bays, at White Water Outfitters, Bryce has heard a mix of good and bad days when it comes to the cod fishing lately. It seems to be a little streaky where there will be a couple good days in a row followed by a lull. In any case, there are still fish to be caught and the freezer always has a little more room for filets.
At River Bay Outfitters, Paul reports that the best action has been on the freshwater side, especially with trout in Connetquot Park. With the river open all year, and the recent spell of mild weather, the fishing has been great and anyone looking to wet a line can count on an exciting afternoon.
It’s not looking good for anyone waiting to go ice fishing this year, but that only means that the open water fishing may resume sooner than normal. Early March is a great time to hit the lakes and ponds as big pickerel and bass begin to snap out of their sluggish winter phase and look to fill their empty bellies. Get the gear ready early and be prepared to head out when the time comes.
