Its always refreshing to run into a spring-like day in February, and the last few days this week have been just that. Its been a great opportunity to get out and hit the water for some mid-winter fishing action. The warm conditions have woken up the local ponds, rivers and tidal creeks, and the cod bite out of Montauk continues to produce fish.
Paul from River Bay Outfitters reports that the local parks and rivers have been fishing well this week. The rise in temperature seems to have kick-started the appetites of fresh water dwellers. This may be short lived as the forecast calls for more February appropriate weather, but for the time being, fresh water anglers are taking it all in. The local Oceanside tidal waters have begun to produce white perch. They may have been there all along and are now just being reported due to the good weather letting more anglers take a cast, but it is worth taking a trip out while the timing is right. Carp have also begun to show signs of life this week but again, its best to target them before the freeze resumes.
At White Water Outfitters, the store employees continue to hear positive reports of the cod action out of Montauk. The best bite has been around Block Island the action is still been a little tricky time but the fishing has been well worth taking the ride out east.
As this month comes to a close, most anglers will still have to pick and choose the days they are able to attack the water. The fish are beginning to get restless and looking to feed in most fresh water locations so look to take advantage of the warm weather days and start to sharpen up for the start of spring.
